I ended up going into the recovery mode by pressing the play button and power,,, release the play. It displays the option of Reformmatting and or Reloading O/S. When you do this the computer USB didn't recognize the device. I found that if you use the creative zen recovery tool you can depress the devices return button which allows the software to recognize zen. The recovery tool promted firmware load,, load was successful. For some reason the player went dead after that but this morning I disconnected and reloaded songs. I thought this a.m. I was going to be back to square one but apparently I was tired from the struggle.

try using windows media player first, open media player and insert your cd then click on the rip tab and start the ripping after its finished take the music you just ripped from the windows media player library and drag it to the sync bar on the side once your sync list is complete click on sync your music should apper in you zen afterwards
Hello,i have been reading your problem and i have found a sollution that should help! As your using wwp to sync your music it may be very slow,therefore that why it keeps freezing.... i reccomend you download "winamp" to sync your music,it worked for my mate who is also using a Zen....
You won't need to download or install any programs if you have Windows Media Player on your computer. You can use other programs but WMP is probably the easiest!
Plug in your MP3 player using the USB cord (should be in box)
(If your songs are already in Library skip this step). Click "File" (top left hand corner) then "Add to Library..." Click "OK" WMP will now find all music on your computer and add it to Library.
If the internet is connected WMP will attempt to find song info such as title, artist, album etc. Otherwise right click on song and click "Edit"
Click on "Sync" tab (top of player). A sidebar should appear with "Creative zen.. etc" written on the top.
Drag songs into sidebar.
Click "Start Sync"
The songs will now download onto your MP3 player.
To organise your files into folders etc. go to "My Computer" then "Creative Zen etc" then "Music" and create folders (right click "create folder") copy, paste, and drag your songs in folders as you like.
You can now unplug you MP3 player and turn it on!

Start up Window Media player on your computer. Plug your Zen device into the computer. Wait until you see it listing in WMP. Unplug the Zen and see if you can play the songs.
The licenses on the device should be updated by WMP when you plug in the device
