These error message relates to the BIOS and it appears the BIOS battery requires replacing because it is flat.
error 161 usually BIOS has lost its configuration/ checksum error.
error 163 usually BIOS clock not updating.
Replace this battery and go into the BIOS setting and configure the date/time settings, and hardware settings (if you are not sure select the factory default settings) save and exit

Tell me, please: IBM ThinkPad-2635 - where is the cmos battery and how will be disassembled 2635 to replace battery. Thanks!

The word please goes a LONG way with me. Makes me want to 'break my neck' to help that person;

991009, this is Lenovo Support > ThinkPad 380ED 2635 Notebook PC >
Manuals download page,

[ Note:

Manufacturer name: IBM
Model (Line): ThinkPad
Model Series: 380
Subseries: ED
Machine Type: 2635 ]

HMM stands for Hardware Maintenance Manual. It is a Service Manual.

Under the bold heading - User Guides and Manuals - click on -
Hardware maintenance manuals

In the drop down list, you want the first file listed.

Under the subheading -
Hardware maintenance manual Volume 4 ( September 1997) - ThinkPad 380, 385, 560/E, 760, 765,

click on the blue - [ + ] Click for files

Under the - Name - heading, click on the blue -

ThinkPad 380, 385, 560, 560E, all 760, 765, and SELECTADOCK III
Hardware Maintenance Manual (March 1999)

The service manual (HMM) is a PDF file.

[ Disregard the following if you are aware;

The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the above file name it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up.

[Took 10 seconds just now, with medium speed DSL connection ]

At the top of the PDF file in the header is the Zoom In icon, ( + ), and Zoom Out icon, ( - )

Zoom In increases the view size.
Zoom Out decreases the view size.

You can decrease to see the entire page, or increase, (And use the side/bottom bars), to view a particular subject on the page, Up Close.

To the Right of the Down Arrow is the page number box.
You can use the Down Arrow, (And later Up Arrow), to arrive at the page you want,

If you know the page you want you can do this;

1) Put your mouse cursor in the page number box. Left-click once,
(Anything in the page number box will now be highlighted in Blue ),

2) Type the page number,

3) Press the Enter key.

Page numbers in the PDF page number box, do NOT match the actual service manual page numbers.

Page numbers I refer to will be in the PDF page number box.
You can also click on the Bookmarks menu icon to the left, to arrive at the section you want.
[ It is right above the paperclip icon ]

You can save a copy to your computer. This way you can burn a copy to disk, or flashdrive, for safekeeping.

Then after checking out the copy is indeed good, you can delete it from the computer, and save harddrive space.
If you do not know how to do this procedure, and wish to, just state in a Comment ]

Go to Page 72.

[ Bookmarks menu;
1) Click on the + sign next to - ThinkPad 380, 385 (2635)

2) Click on the + sign next to - FRU Removals and Replacements

(FRU = Field Replaceable Units.
In otherwords for the tech in the field. If the tech cannot repair on site, the unit is sent to the manufacturer for repair, or replacement ]

3) Click right on - 1020 DIMM Card / Backup Battery

From me;
A) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger) if plugged in, and remove the Battery.

B) Suggest lay a soft static free cloth on the table you're working on.
(NEVER work on a bed, couch, or directly on a carpet floor!
HIGH areas of Static electricity )

Turn the laptop over, bottom side up, Battery Compartment to the lower right. (Towards you)
Lay on the cloth.

Right above the Battery Compartment is the DIMM Card / Backup Battery Compartment.

Loosen it's single screw all the way. (It shouldn't remove )
Lift the cover up on the same side as the screw. There are plastic tabs on the opposite side.

The Backup Battery is to the left of the Ram Memory module/s.

(Note* The Positive { + } symbol on the battery ALWAYS goes UP, when being installed )

What do i do when my thinkpad says error

Reboot your machine while holding the F8 key as it boots back up. A menu will apear. Choose -->"start windows in safe mode with networking".
The os will start in safe mode. run an AVG virus scan, then run Defrag by exploring your computer, right click on C: drive, click PROPERTIES, then the TOOLS tab, click the "check now" button, and only checkmark the top box 'fix file system errors', then click ok, the computer will then tell you it will scan upon next reboot., Now click the DEFRAG NOW button. the choose defrag. After Defrag runs for about an hour and it is finished, restart the system. If is still won't run normally, go back into Safemode buy pressing F8 on reboot, then run a registry fixing program such as uniblue registrybooster, then reboot again. If it still won't run right, you may want to reinstall Windows and see if that works. If reinstalling windows doesn't fix it, it is may be a hardware problem.
Good luck.

IBM 2635

I just dug my old 2635 out from under the couch and having the same issue. I'm wondering if the internal battery needs replacing - this would give power to the system ROM where the date and time is held. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Hi my IBM 2635-6AU, ThinkPad 380ED 26356AU screen is dark and i cant see

From what you are stating it seems like your backlight in your lcd needs to be replaced. Plug an external monitor up to your laptop. Press the fn & f key (the one with the picture of a monitor in it.) Your diplay should project to the monitor. Display is ok.....replace the backlight.

Hope this helps you
