Copies come out of machine with huge black smudges

We have an older Sharp copy machine, model SF-2114. It has been working fine and all of a sudden the copies came out with a heavy black line on one side of the paper. We put a new ink cartridge in and now it comes out with huge black smudges. Should we try to have it repaired? Is there something simple we can do, or should we just buy a new one?

SOURCE: I just purchased an imagerunner 2200 from liquidation sale the copies come out black

Hello Platanon,
I feel confident i can help you. And I cannot praise you enuff for the sample you have offerred. Nice touch, and extremely helpful. The drum on your machine is toast. Good news is that it is relatively inexpensive, and comes with instuctions to install it. The fact that you were sharp enough to provide the sample page of the poor copy quality artifact makes me feel VERY confident you will have no problem ordering a new drum and successfully installing it. Just to bolster your confidence, check this out. Notice how there is a pattern to the worst yuck on the page you submitted. It correspondes with the diameter of the drum (@ every 3.7 inches). The linear streaks toward the center of the page are another sign of drum wear. Canon rates the drum @ 55k +/-. You are officially fixed :-) . But if you need more help let me know .Take care...........SPINAL.......

SOURCE: Big streaks on copies from Sharp SF-7800 copier, not fax machine.

You probably have some build up on the glass, which happens if you use the auto feeder most often. Alcohol type cleaner will remove with a very softcloth. One small dot will look like a long streak on a feeder, much like a streaked fax. The other issue is the photoreceptor belt has nicks or is dirty eaither way it needs to be replaced. Try the cleaning first and you may have to look hard for the small dots built up on the glass.

SOURCE: Black blotches and streaks on copies

Sounds like a worn drum unit primarily the cleaning blade on the drum is failing. If you don't change it out soon the dirt escaping from the drum and dirty copies will foul-out you fixing unit, = more $$.

SOURCE: after changing toner on my sharp, SF-2022 copy

This means the machine is over-toning ie using more toner than required caused by either improper toner or different brand of toner. The correct toner is sf 222T1. Replace developer and use the right toner and clean the drum and its blade. You may need to clean fuser rollers for cleaner copies.

Leaves black marks on copies

It could be leaking toner from the recovery area that sis on top of the dum, it removes any toner that was not transfered to the paper. You would have to remove it and empty out the toner.

Black copies

lay an original on the glass and make a copy, see if the lamp under the glass stays lit as it scans the original. Don't look directly at the light, it's very bright.

Replacing drum unit on copier: Sharp SF 2114

Well, if the light under the glass doesn't come on, that means that black copies can hapen. Nothing to do with the drum or drum unit. Either the lamp burnt or the protecting fuse is blown. If you take out the glass, you can mouve the carriage with the mirrors to the right and you can see the exposure lamp. If it has dark ( like silver) bands on it, the lamp is burnt and its brightness will not be enough to make a copy. CHANGE THE LAMP. If the lamp is ok check the thermic fuse wich is in touch with the lamp carriage, and normaly it burns when taking a lot of copies in one go. The drum is a red cilinder that is in drum unit next to the developer unit where you put the toner. If you open the ma chine you can see it about the midle just above the transfer corona. If you don't get it right i can explain how to change the drum. GOOD LUCK.
