Question about Sony MDS-E10 Mini Disc Player

1 Answer

Read Error I just sold an MDS-E10 on eBay. It was working fine before I shipped it. The buyer says it is now giving a "read error" message any time a disk is inserted. I packed it well for shipping. What could have happened enroute to cause this? I can always refund and have him ship it back, but if there's a fix I'd like to know. Thanks!!

Does he have a pre-recorded MiniDisc that he can try it with? It could be that a cable wormed its way loose, or the laser took a dump during the shipping. Hard to tell. Try the pre-recorded disc first, then you might end-up having it back.

Sony MDS-JE480...Inserting disc..C13 error READ CODE, keeps ejecting disc so dont know what to do pls help

The c13 error means that the player is unable to read the table of contents (TOC) on discs any more.If it's an occasional error then you can try switching to TDK blanks as they seem to be easier for flaky players to read, but if it's happening regularly to all discs then your machine is unrepairable due to a total lack of spare parts.

On the plus side, there are millions of MD units now lying unused as folks have moved on from them and as they're mostly worthless people don't generally bother with trying to sell them. Almost every piece of MD gear I own has come free of charge via my local FreeCycle and Freegle groups. Whatever you do, don't buy a used player from anyone: they're all getting on now and the TOC error is an age-related fault which may occur at any time.

If you wish to see exactly what features other machines have then visit the superb equipment browser at minidisc.org. The site is hosted but n longer maintained though so some information is out of date, but it's still the most comprehensive source of free information about MD available.

Sorry here's probably no hope for your MDS-JE480, but I hope that my reply has given you a practical alternative means of solving your problem.

Won't record. Often get read error when inserting minidisc.

The head assembly has a read head and a record head (combined into one sub-assembly). Unless you're in a very dusty environment or are a heavy smoker then it's difficult to get dirty heads, it's much more likely that your unit is just suffering an age-related head failure which will progress further to affect disc playback as well. The first sign of a playback error will be the dreaded "TOC error". There is no fix: the units are long discontinued and the heads do not last forever. Spare ones are as rare as fresh **** **** and are not easy to fit. The unit has lasted far longer than it was designed to and is now on the slippery slope to total failure. While you still can, make analogue transfers of any music which you only have on minidisc and prepare to switch to a newer format in the near future. It's a real shame as the sound quality on a good MD unit still blows anything which has followed it (especially the iPlayer) out of the water.

When inserting a minidisc into the unit, (recorded or blank) all i get is a 'read error' mesage

This cannot be fixed. You need a new head for the machine but they're no longer available.

Almost all of my minidisc equipment has come from FreeCycle/Freegle and as the name suggests they didn't cost me a bean; I suggest you try there first for a replacement machine.

C13 error !!!!

Amazing what google can find...

I was ion touch with the Sony tech dept. If you get a C13 error it's because of dust on the lens causing TOC read errors. I didn't have any compressed air in a can so I used a soccer ball hand pump and pumped a ton of air just inside the door of the unit. 2 seconds later it worked fine. No cleaner MD needed.

I have a minidisc model mds e10

Hi,

it seems your MD unit is expecting a digital signal on the digital input causing this message to appear.
You need to connect a signal source to the digital input

or

connect an analog signal to an analog input and select the analog input as signal source.

In both cases the DIN UNLOCK message will then disappear.

Cheers

Sony MDS-E10 has been dropped. need schematics to solve problem.

Your service shop would need to purchase the service manual (if available). The problem here is that without seeing the unit, I can;t tell you whether the optics are bad or the tracking head is bad or the loading mechanism is defective. None of those options are cheap. Let me look into this a bit and see what I can find. I will try to get you part numbers at least with costs.
