you had a software error, when you reset the system it re installed all the software. you got lucky had one that did that i reformated the hdd and still nothing put a disc in and it would just continuosly read the disc and nothing would ever come of it. the first set of PS3's had inferier blue ray drives and they tend to crash on the hardware end. if this happens sony has a refurb program for $150 you can send yours in and get another back that is refurbed...
sony jst ripped us off with ps2. u know, always making something not perfect so they could sell a better product, does ps3 sound familiar. im sure something will be similar to ps3, then ps4 comes out, so on and so forth. mostly, i cant play rockstar games in my ps2, the video and audio doesnt match, then it jst freezes on loading scenes. jeeze.
If you have your playstation 2 standing upright it may be this tht ios causing the problem as the disc will not be correctly line up with the laser that reads the disc this could also cause scratchs on the discs, its best to have the playstation 2 in the downright postition.
The Blue back disc is CD format. The DVD laser circuit is giving you trouble. You can adjust the DVD pot some on the back of the Laser. Turn it about 3 degrees clockwise. Then put it the laser back in. Test the PS2 with no cover on, and use the white round disc from the laser drive cover to clamp a disc onto the spindle. Test DVD and PS2 Games that do not have Blue back.
the reason it makes the "grinding" noise is because the motor that moves the lens to read the disk is dieing, this generally happens when you have played your ps2 for a long time, this only happens to older consoles.
