My T30 will not turn on all the time. When the button is pushed all the lights turn on except for the hard drive. Then the laptop turns off. After trying several times the the hard drive light turns on with all the other lights and the laptop works fine. Any help will be appreciated.
Also, there is a rubber button on the bottom of the laptop, I forgot what that is for.

Re: IBM T30, turns on now and then
Look for bios update, and for that buton in your back laptop is for reseting the laptop at factory seting (default seting) . for that with hard disk problem , put the hard disck on a external hard drive reader and see if is still ok, or maybe the hard is full with data, For bios password try to find aplication KILLCMOS and reset the password.AND for Fumestsu Try to start your laptop without baterry in just with cable power.

This is in laptop terms an older laptop. i recall it was fitted with a 20 or 40GB hard drive and with 256mb of ram and unless you have since upgraded it, it is possible the hard drive is filling up or it is beginning to fail through age.
Things you can try:
See how much space is availible on the hard drive, to work effectively there should be at least 2 gb of space that windows can use as a swap file
In My computer / C drive/ properties/ tools, defragment the hard drive and then run a disc cleanup, see how much space is fred and if it runs faster after the hard drive has been decluttered and defragmented.
If you still have problems / the hard drive is filling up, move some files to a seperate location such as an external drive to free up space.
If after this, you still get a slow start up, download a copy of HDD Tune (the free version) and do a health check on your hard drive, any bad secorrs or RSC errors means you should consider replacing the drive asap.
On the Thinkpad T30, the number lock key can be turned on or off by pressing the shift-key and the scroll-lock key. The scroll lock button is found at the top of the keyboard between the PrtSc button and the Pause button.
You should see the light with the arrow and the number 1 inside (just above the F7 key) turn on and off when you press this.
This could be a couple of different things. First, remove the battery and start with AC power only. Sometime batteries will malfunction and cause this. Second, remove the memory and try starting with one chip in, then change out the chips and try. And third, this could be that the hard drive is begging to fail. If the hard drive doesn't initialize and the machine can't read it, then it will appear to be on without running. Usually it's with the small electric motor in the drive. Next time it doesn't start, listen to see if you can hear the drive spinning, if you can't, then it's the hard drive. Run through these one at a time, if you find that one helps then you don't need to follow on down the list.
Here is the steps that you may try Disconnect the AC adaptor, take the battery out, press the power button and hold about 7 second. Connect the AC adaptor and turn the unit on. If issue persists please post for further diagnostic.
