Question about Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router

Resetting my password for my wireless-g broadband router w/ a mac

I originally had password protection for my wireless-g router and about a week ago, the network  name changed back to "linksys" and now it doesn't require my password. Can anyone help me with the process of resetting my network name and password with a mac? (using leopard, if that makes a difference.)
ps. I don't have the start up cd for the router anymore.

It sounds as if your router has been reset to factory defaults.

I'm no Mac expert so can only recommend the Linksys website, www.linksys.com, : click the 'support' option, then search for your router model number. You should find a downloadable user guide, which will help you set up security again.

    - Though if you can give your model number, a Mac expert might lend a hand here?

When we originally set up this router we did not password protect it but would now like to? what do we do?

I suppose you mean to protect your wireless network. In that case, you need to go to your router's configuration by typing the router's IP address in any web browser (like IE or Firefox) and look for configuration tab called "Wireless Security". I recommend you use WPA to protect your network.

Linksys Wireless-G password issue

You need to reset the router. Unplug the router. Hold the reset button down with a paper clip. While holding the reset button down, re-plugin the power. After fifteen seconds, release the reset button.

Your router should be back to its original state. You should be able to login at 192.168.1.1 with admin/admin.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

How do I put my wireless internet as private and password protected? It is the LinkSys one.

To secure your wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps.
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router.

I need to secure my wireless router

When you first setup a wireless router you need to connect the wireless router to the computer with a LAN cable.
Then you open a browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and on the address bar you type the IP configuration address of the wireless router eg. for Netgear and D-Link wireless it is http://192.168.0.1
Enter the default login name and password.
You should change the password and you should setup WAP or WAP2 encryption (WAP2 is the strongest encryption) and change the SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
For further wireless protection enable MAC address filtering. The MAC address of the wireless card is entered in the router MAC address filter table, which allows only the wireless card with this MAC address to connect to the router.
The wireless card on the computer needs to be configured with the wireless router's settings. The LAN cable can be removed and the computer communicates wirelessly with the router.

Well once it is reset, in the configuration section of the router, for setting standard passwords, you can change the password, which is advisable.

Next, for setting up a private wire/wireless network, My way of doing it is by setting the system up to Only allow Certain Mac Address's from the computers that are allowed to access to the internet through yours

To get the MAC Address, Hit Start, Run Program, Command Prompt. Then in Command Prompt, enter this string line: ipconfig /all

From there, it will give you the MAC Address for that computer. It should be a total of 12 Alpha Numeric Digits, Spaced with dashes between every 2. With that, you go into the router and in the Mac Address section for computers allowed to connect to your network, you enter in all the MAC Addresses that are allowed to use your network. Save, then it should refresh the page once that is done. With that, it makes a very hard to break Network that actually doesnt take much time. I was quite surprised 4 years ago to find that this was the easiest way to really set up a near perfect network with no issues

Protection on my Mac

Given that you have setup the Internet connection on your router, encrypting the wireless security will be fairly easy for you. Just follow these steps.

1. You should use you PC or MAC that is connected directly to the router via an ethernet cable. You can use PC or MAC, which ever is connected directly to the router (Connected thru cable not wireless).

2. Open Internet Explorer / Firefox (PC) or Safari / Firefox / Internet Explorer (MAC), then go to the address bar and type http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar and press enter. A window will pop up prompting you for a username and password to access the configuration page for your router. Leave the username blank and type admin as the password (**If that will not work, (Enter admin for both the username and password)

3. You should see the Setup page shown below :

be6ce2f.jpg

4. Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the settings screen. Change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) from the default value to something unique (you can use your name or last name, or any name that you would like, because that will be the name of your wireless network, that will be the one that your wireless computers will detect) then click on Save Settings and then Continue when the Settings are successful dialog is displayed.

5. Now click on the Wireless Security subsection at the top of the page. In order to password protect your wireless network first use the Security Mode dropdown box to select WEP and then from the WEP Security dropdown box select 64 bits 10 hex digits. Choose a password between 6 and 8 characters and type it into the Passphrase box. Then click Generate. It Will generate 4 keys (Key 1-4). You will use key 1 as your password.

6. Finally click Save Settings and then Continue when the Settings are successful dialog is displayed.

7. Now let your wireless PC scan for available wireless networks, find the name of the wireless network that you have specified earlier for SSID then connect to that network. Of course since the network is password protected, it will ask you to enter a password, this is time that you will enter the network key (Key 1 - password).
