Question about ScanSoft Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8 (a109a-g00-8.0) for PC

1 Answer

It's going REALLY slow

I have a great computer (2.5 GHz and 2GB RAM) which works quickly and multi-tasks well. I have recently reinstalled XP which has made it even better. But, the Dragon program has quickly become painfully slow. When I first start a document, it takes ages before it initially responds and then it slows down and speeds up erratically, sometimes leaving me hanging for a minute or two. It's SO frustrating. Can anyone help. I'd be HUGELY appreciative. Many thanks, Rose

Re: It's going REALLY slow

If everything is working well on the PC and the Dragon software is newly having a problem I would try uninstalling it from Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs and then reinstalling. Very odd that one piece of software would cause the PC to act slower. Does it use a lot of disk space? Maybe try a Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter (All Programs, Accessories, System Tools).

Memory is used up by excel

I don't think you can. It's a real resource hog especially if youre using 2010/13. See below.

Excel 2003 is officially limited to 1 Gigabyte (GB) of memory.
This limit appears to be a limit on the working set memory used by the Excel process, which is the memory reported by Windows Task Manager.
Although Excel 2003 has a substantially increased memory capacity, many of the individual specific memory limits listed below have not changed in Excel 2003.

Excel 2007 is limited to 2 Gigabytes of memory for the Excel process under Windows XP/Vista (Windows memory limit).
This 2 Gigabyte limit is a limit on the Virtual Memory address space. Virtual memory used by a process is larger than the working set memory reported by Windows Task Manager, so the amount of useable memory under Excel 2007 is considerably less than twice that of Excel 2003.
Because Excel 2007 (Excel12) also requires more memory to store the indexes to the increased number of rows and columns you may not be able to load larger workbooks under Excel 2007 than was possible under Excel 2003. Memory Fragmentation may also mean that it is difficult to make use of all of the available 2 GB of virtual memory.

Many of the individual memory limits listed below have been removed in Excel 2007.

Excel 2010 is available in 2 versions: 32-bit (2 Gigabytes of virtual memory) and 64-bit (8-Terabytes (which is 8000 Gigabytes of virtual memory)).
The 32-bit version has the same memory limits as Excel 2007, but the 64-bit version, when used with a 64-bit Windows operating system, will have extremely large memory limits.
Note that the different versions of Windows Vista 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit support differing amounts of RAM.

Problem with Windows XP... Subject - Non Responsive Programs.... Symptoms - When a program or application hangs up... [any kind, from system processes to 3rd party software] I lose control of...

Hi Baluchandra,

There are several things you can try. Download Piriform's CCleaner. You can find it here:

Once installed clean the hard drive. This will clean all the caches and temporary file. Also inside CCleaner there is a Startup button that will show you everything that starts when you boot up Windows. Uncheck any third party software that yo do not use or that does not need to be running. Don't uncheck anything that is a system file, only uncheck the programs that you are sure that does not need to be running.
After you have done this Defrag the HDD. In most case this will help your system performance greatly. If the system still locks up, there is a very good chance that you have a virus or some form of malware. A great site that will help you step by step with virus and malware removal is:

It is a forum based site that has experts that will step you through the removal process and check your system for anything that may be wrong.

Hope this helps you

Check if your internet is working fine. It seems like you are running with slow internet speed.
Another possibilities are there may be other programs downloading something like a Torrent client.

How to upgrade my pc model Hp compaq dc7100 series convertible minitower,my purpose is to play the sfecial force pc games faster without log.cpu intel(R) pentium 4.302 ghz 3.19ghz 0.99 gb of ram

You need a Bigger HDD, you need another Motherboard capable of at least Core 2 Dual Core, or better, plus at least 4 GB or DDR RAM. Really be best to sell that PC, and use the money to build your own.

Slow for open file at freehand mx 11

The most common reason for slow processing speed is insufficient RAM memory.

Increase the RAM, if RAM available is no more than 512MB, then it must be upgraded.

Check also your hard drive state. If you have less than 1GB free, that will slow down the system. Go to Start>>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defregmenter and do a Defrag of the hard disk.

If you have at least 1 GB RAM, and you took care of the hard drive, then you can check the process starting up on their own and remove the useless one, or spot mala-ware that can affect speed. You can use a software like Hijack This, and search on google te function of each process started on the list reported by the software.

You can download Hijack this here MajorGeeks | If download does not start, then click at the top of the page, where it says Click Here If It Does Not.
Be careful if you delete the wrong files using this software you can harm the system, and Windows may not work properly.

If you think you have malaware you can also install Spy Bot, and do a system scan. Download Spybot from The home of Spybot.

If all the above does not work, and there is no malaware, then you usually reinstall the system.

Check also the bios settings, BIOS can downgrade the CPU speed on default , even if this is uncommon on recent BIOS.

If a computer is still slow with a fresh system and enough resources then it is one of those rare occasions when you have an hardware fault.
Hardware that can cause slow down is: RAM CPU Motherboard HD Video card.

Some tips on procedure can damage your windows installation. Do not download Hijackthis software and do not change BIOS settings and do not touch hardware unless you are sure of what you are doing.

Outlook 2007 slow on closing and crashes on open

Your computer might be using caching. Can you tell me how much RAM you have on your computer? If you have 2GB of RAM i would recommend disabling the caching. This slows down the system quiet a bit (since it uses miliseconds instead of nanoseconds). Your computer is as fast as the slowest component.  I would also suggest defragging the drive.

2007 version running SLOW!!

Are you trying to open a .xls file instead of an .xlsx file? Xlsx is the excel 2007 file format. Another cause could be a lack of free space on your hard drive. Uninstalling the 2003 version or defragging could do it. One last question: XP or Vista? I find Office 2007 works better with Vista. Good Luck! ---- JG
