Question about Sony (CDU5211-10/10S) Internal 52x CD-ROM Drive
What is the system configuration? How old is the system? Is it a dual boot? Do you have any programs running when running defrag or scandisk?

You cannot start a virtual machine in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or in Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 from a third-party startup CD or from an ISO file that contains a third-party startup CD image.
When you start a virtual machine that does not have a guest operating system, you receive the following warning message:
Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device.
If you insert a startup CD for the operating system into the physical CD drive, or drag an ISO file that contains a startup CD image to the CD icon in the status bar of the virtual machine
window, and then press ENTER, Virtual PC 2004 and Virtual Server 2005 will ignore the operating system that is on the CD or on the CD image.
hope this helps

computers need all of the data and electrical current to travel through every working device and to have an end to be able work properly
a motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive if its a flat ribbon 40 pin type IDE replace it this will be the first to fail check all electrical
power input and extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd floppy drives need to have current go through make sure these drives are working
also check the Cmos battery and computer ram make sure they are securely seated with no dust built up or in the sockets
although on some motherboards the cmos batteries are soldered in
you might not have enough RAM random access memory not having enough will cause your computer to run over its maximum limits and can cause the blue screen of death and hang also uninstall some unnecessary programs and run the chkdsk utitlity
control panel administrive tools, computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes
automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart
you should have no input while the chkdsk utility is I progress any input might damage your computer
then defragment your hard drive
hope this helps
