Hi yodogfish,

I'm sorry to tell you this, but if the drive is not recognizing any of the discs you insert (but it is making noise and lighting up), then it's likely that the laser has worn out. This is fairly common, but it means you'll have to replace the drive (CD/DVD drives generally generally cost less to replace than to fix).

If your computer is still under warranty, I recommend contacting HP regarding a replacement drive (or the store where you bought it, if they provide a service plan). Otherwise, you simply have to buy a new drive and install it yourself - they range in price from about $35 to $100 and are relatively easy to put in.

I hope this helps - please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Cant read the cd

This can be a media or a DVD drive problem.
First check if when you insert the disc the lights of the drive flash. Second clean the media or CD. Third there is Disc Cleanup to clean the laser of your DVD drive. Check the power and data cable are connect.
Is possible the the drive is damage check for no normal sounds when you insert a media.
If is possible use a CD or media on other drive if it work you need a new DVD drive.

Stiffy drive don't respond and DVD Rom spin but don't read CD.

Try different discs to determine whether it's the disc or the drive. If it's the drive the the lens on drive might be dirty, try cleaning it with proper "Cleaning CD" if that doesn't help the drive it self might be going out (as in the mechanical parts on the drive). In the later case the only solution is buy a new drive.

Drive not responding

Windows uses autorun or autoplay to detect removable discs such as cds and dvds.

Some cd and dvdroms, especially software installers, have an autorun.inf file which forces the disc to start.

Firstly Autoplay. Your media player may have been set to disable this function so your discs do not automatically run. Or you may have several suitable media players installed, but you haven't set one as your default player. Make sure you choose a default player, then set it to automatically run when a disc is inserted.

Secondly, you should be able to manually run the disc by going to My Computer then left click the dvd or cd drive. You may be prompted to select a player or program to run the disc.

Thirdly, "autorun" may have been disabled in registry.
You can check this by looking at the following key in registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoDriveAutoRun
This will be followed by Bit 0 for drive A and Bit 1 for drive B etc. IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS, DO NOT TOUCH REGISTRY!!!

Fourthly, as kykeaton says, you may have a faulty drive.

autorun may have been deliberately disabled in registry.

Transfering my video tapes to DVD

A couple of quick observations: -If you have two or more optical drives you could be inserting the disk in the wrong one. -You may have just misspoke when you said *insert into the DVD/CD burner drive a CD-R disc* but just to make sure you need to be inserting a blank DVD disk and not a blank CD. No offence intended, especially since I?ve made both of these mistakes in the past myself :)
