You can correct this with out reformating the drive, by performing a system repair using your operating installation CD. How ever to completely solve the problem you will have to reformat the drive at one point.
Perform a system repair, then back up your images and other files that you need onto external drives, DVDs or CDs or on a separate partition; that is if your hard disk is partitioned.
You have to put the windows disk in, and then shut down computer. Make
sure the laptop is set to boot from cd. Then follow the on screen
instructions. PS BACK UP ALL YOUR IMPORTANT FILES BEFORE INSTALLING
/ REFORMATTING WINDOWS! HOPE THIS HELPS
