Question about Dryers

1 Answer

My dryer is drying one load fine. Then when we want to dry another load shortly after, it will start for a second or two then shut off. The duct from the heating element to the back of the tub is so hot you can't touch. I've replaced the thermostat and the same problem. I've replaced the main computer board and the same problem. Fault code F 40 comes up on the screen, but I can't fined it in the manual.

F40 is a error that appears between the machine control and the motor control when communication becomes lost. Check the connection between the two. The error codes whould be on the tech sheet beneath your console panel along with how to check for this error. Contact service they should be able to give you more information

Now you replace the machine control. A 'communication error' means the machine control is not getting a signal to the motor control. I assume you ohm'ed out the motor as well.

The tech sheet explains how to check the motor. As far as being sheepish about changing the wrong board, don't sweat it. Even seasoned technicians do this all the time in the field if they don't verify where the exact problem lies. Too many times the tech sheet is just a general guide and will not cover every eventuality. Some things are left up to speculation unless you start OHMing everything involved to spec.

It also is not the first time more than one part fails, especially when they are interconnected.

3 month old dryer is not drying, takes two drying cycles to get clothes dry.

Bad airflow to outside. To prove this, remove the hose and dry a load with windows open back and front of house. If they dry fast, you have a blockage in the hose to the wall or in the connector through the wall. Can also get birds nests in there if the flaps are faulty or weak.

Whirlpool elec dryer #LER4634PQ0 starts and heats fine and then shuts off after a few minutes. Will restart and dry the load. What is the prob?

might be a bad thermostat if cleaning the vent hose doesn't solve the problem. They're are usually 2 of them about the size of quarter, located on the heating element housing and easily replaced. I'm betting the problem is in the vent ducting!

Dryer stops too soon

if the dryer seems to be running fine check the vent line and the duct that the lint filter slides into, most likely if it takes to long to dry clothes lint is blocking the air movement somewhere, when was the last time you cleaned out the dryer and vent line, you should clean the dryer once a year so you don't have a fire and your clothes will dry on time,if the vent line is long remove it from the back of the dryer and blow it out with a leaf blower, remove the lint filter duct and clean it and vac out the cabinet where the motor is.

Hi and Welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

You already have discovered the problem. Lint has built up in the vent / exhaust ducting. Most of the time the through the wall vent flapper gets lint build up on it outside the house and then as that restricts airflow you get condensation in the ducting. The condensation causes the lint to form a cake like paste inside the ducting. THOROUGHLY Clean out your vent ducting from the dryer connection all the way thru the outside wall and your dryer will be fine. If you need to replace the ducting please do so. Ducting is cheaper than the electricity you waste on clogged ducting. You proved your dryer will work correctly when you dried a load of clothes with the ducting removed.

Thanks for choosing FixYa

Electric dryer element heats for short period of time and then shuts off, will come back on in a few min. and only is on foe 10 to 15 seconds and then back off. It takes 2 to 3 hours to dry a load

you need to clean out the dryer and vent line, try running it with the vent line off and see if it runs better, also you need to clean out the duct that the lint filter slides into and vac out the inside of dryer where the motor is,if the vent line is long blow it out with a leaf blower to clean it out, check the outside vent and make sure that isn't blocked, you need to do this once a year or you will start blowing thermal fuse and over heat the motor and your clothes will take hours to dry

It takes three cycles to dry clothes, andthere is heat?

The most likely cause is poor airflow. This may be due to a clogged lint screen (should be cleaned after each load) or a clogged vent. Run the dryer empty and feel the airflow from the vent outlet (where the vent exits the house). If there isn't a good strong flow of air, remove the duct where it attaches to the dryer and check for flow right at the dryer. If there still isn't good flow you may have a bad blower, but chances are the duct is clogged with lint. If it's the white plastic flexible duct or the corrugated metal kind you should replace it with solid 4-inch vent pipe. This will give the best airflow and the smooth walls won't promote lint buildup.

The exterior exhaust vent for the dryer was locked shut not allowing the air to escape. So hopefully that will completely solve the problem!
