The printer requires a maintenance kit. (95% chance anyways) I would suggenst the extended life maintenance kit (10,000 page lifespan) part number 108R00676 to correct this issue. You can usually get these where you get your solid ink cartridges.
The reason he told you that is because ;
if left on permanently the fuser unit has a lamp ( nowadays the newer ones use a ceramic) the lamp continually comes on to keep the fuser warm and ready for you to print.which may cause the lamp to burn prematurely, most business keep theirs on all day with out the sleep mode( too busy to wait to warm up),
But, when you use the sleep mode most models do not turn on the lamp ( if it does it only puts out minimal power) but keep the power ready, which is why when you go to print it takes awhile to warm up.
The lamps are very resilient and last several years before having to change.
