Question about Canon ZR60 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

LCD Screen & Viewfinder screen are black when trying to record

I have a ZR60 Canon miniDV camcorder. When I power it up the Canon Logo screen comes on and then the LCD & the viewfinder go black. There is a flashing red bowl shaped figure with a left to right diagional line thru it with an error pointing to the left sitting above the bowl and to the right of the diagional line. Any ideas what that means? and why I can not see anything in the LCD and/or viewfinder?

The backup batteries inside the camcorder are dead and need to be replaced.

There is a little door next to the view finder that houses the batteries, there are CR1616 watch batteries.

Seems like a hardware issue.
Do you see the menus? If so, then probably some piece of electronics has become unattached or died on the path from the sensor. But I think it's that anyway, otherwise, the pictures wouldn't be black.

Hi,I would suggest you to first trying switching off your device for 5 minutes. This restores and refreshes the device. Go for it
Let me know if this works, if it doesn’t then I’ll provide some other alternative solution.
Thanks

My canon gl2 lcd screen and viewfinder black

Same thing happened to me. No display, no menu, no S-video output while in camera mode, but in VCR mode all was OK. Turning power off and on did not help until I also disconnected the AC power adapter. BTW, Mr. Riggins did not read the question before he answered.

Black screen when we turn on the camcorder

This is a known issue for this camcorder model, canon will fix it for free. Heres there public announcement:

CCD Image Sensor

It has recently come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in this Canon digital camcorder may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.

Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

Turn On & Connection Problems

I have the same problem with my zr60. The firewire port on 3 macs and one PC will not detect the camera in VCR or camera mode. I have the feeling the firewire port in the camera died since the ports in the computers is able to detect other firewire devices.
