I got a solution from the states. Can't just remember where but it was an ebay search that brought it up. If I get a chance I'll try to look it up. - be prepared to get your hands dirty with this one!
The problem I was fixing at the time was to convert a HP Des. Jet 330 to the colour version - 330c and changed the belt at the same time as that was well frayed. Got the belt from a firm in Ripon (N. Yorks) - pretty cheap and very quick delivery. The conversion worked fine and the client tells me the machine is running extreemly well - I should have charged more!

Was the error preceded by 81:01 or 81:11? That is the format for the actual error on a 500 series plotter. If so then you have a Paper-Axis shutdown. Corrective Action: If this error code appeared but was NOT caused by a paper jam, then try the following: Carriage Belt if it is frayed or worn out, if it is good then Replace the Encoder Disk Assembly.
Either something is jammed and preventing the print head carriage from moving from side to side, or the drive belt has snapped. Open the window and check the black belt that runs the width of the printer. Check both ends carefully because often the failure happens when the belt frays and gets wrapped around the motor or idler pulley.
Something is blocking the printhead cleaner assembly from moving forward and backward. Turn the plotter off, open the printhead cleaner access cover (RH side) and see if you can move the cleaners to the front of the machine. If you can move them fairly easily, then try (with the plotter still off) to move the carriage assembly (holds the printheads) to the left of the machine. Check the condition of the carriage belt for frayed areas or missing belt teeth. (I suspect a worn out carriage belt is causing the problem) With the cleaner assembly to the front, and the carriage to the left, turn the plotter back on and see if the error continues.
It is probably the belt is going bad or the slider rods are dirty. Turn off the cutter and see if everything works ok, which I suspect it will. Check for small bits of rubber inside the plotter where the belt runs. If you see pieces, it is the belt that is fraying. Clean and lubricate the slider rods should also be done.
You need to enter the service calibrations menu, to do this select the set up menu, once inside the set up menu press the up arrow & enter keys together. This will take you to the service tools menu, from here select service calibrations (printhead alignment and colour calibration are both in this menu). If you still here problems after you have calibrated your machine or the calibration fail replace the printheads.
