Thanks for your quick response. I suppose my best bet is to take it to a service center. Now I'm off to find one in my area. Thanks again...cjmcoff

This is a common problem for this model. It has a memory IC that must be replaced. This is a surface mounted IC that requires exceptional soldering skills to replace. I work at an authorized Pioneer service center and have repaired a good number of these for this exact problem. Unless you have great soldering skills it is not something that should be attempted to do yourself, it can cause permanent damage to the board if not done perfectly.

If you have the proper skills and soldering equipment I will be happy to give you the Pioneer part number so you can replace it yourself. If not, then you really should just take it to a service center and have a professional do this.

Let me know if you would like that part number.

I glad I could help, but did you have to give me such a bad rating. After all, it was the best answer you could have gotten since it is accurate. The ratings are a little difficult to understand at first, but a "Thanks for Trying" rating means that I did not help you with your problem and it affects my overall rating in a very negative way.

Since I did identify what the cause of your problem is, it should have rated higher. A "FixYa!" or "Helpful" rating would have been more appropriate since you now know what the cause is and you know what you need to do to get it fixed.

Most authorized Pioneer service centers should know exactly what this repair is about. A service center that is not authorized for Pioneer may not have seen this problem before and could mean that they would end up charging more in labor because it could take them longer to figure out. If you would like, I can tell you the part number and you can let the service center know what part needs to be replaced. You can tell them that you got the information from Pioneer's tech support and they said it was a common problem for this failure. It could help to save you some money.

Thanks so much for the higher rating, it is very much appreciated. This is the only reward we get here at FixYa! for helping people with these free problems and a good ratings makes it really worth my effort.

Here is the reference number, part number, part name and the board that the part is located on. When you take it in for service, see if they will give you a accurate estimate for replacing this part. The part will cost between $45 and $55, depending on the service centers mark up (all shops mark up the cost) and the labor for the repair will also depend on the shops rates. My shop would charge $90 for the labor, but we are one of the cheaper labor rates around. Be sure to tell them that Pioneer Tech support told you that this was the fix for this problem. That way they should believe you about it. Some places don't like the customer telling them how to fix something, but if they believe that you have spoke with the manufacturer and this is what they told you, it may help keeping the price down. I don't want to say that repair centers are not honest, but I have seen many times when they will overcharge for some things because most customers have no idea what the actual problem is and what it takes to replace it.

This part number I have given you is the substitute for the original because the original is not available. According to the Pioneer authorized service centers website, this part is available right now and this is the correct part number. The service manual will show a different part number, but as I stated above, it is no longer available and this is the part that Pioneer issues as the proper replacement for it.

    Ref # = IC14
    Part # = K6T1008V2E-TB70
    Part name= SRAM IC
    Board= DVDM Board

Original part number that is no longer available = KM68V1000CLT-7L

Every one of these unit that I have repaired with the same problem you have has been fixed by replacing this part (about 30 to 40 of them in the last few years), but it is always possible that the cause could be something else although that is highly unlikely.

Plays cds but not dvds

If the lens is clean (clean with cotton swab and alcohol), then the optics are failing. DVDs require more power and accuracy to be read than CDs. The ability to read CDs but not DVDs is usually a good indication that the optics are starting to fail.

Reset you player by doing the following:
With the player on, hooked properly to your television, and on the correct station:
Open the tray
Close the tray (with no DVD inserted)
Hold the stop button down for a full 5 seconds
The CyberHome screen should appear. You should be able to play your dvd's now.
