How can I get the mannual for troubleshooting the motherboard of a pcand another for troubleshooting laptop problems.

As long as you have one good computer up, use the serial numbers/model numbers and I recommend goggle as a search engine, simply type those in till you find the make of each, usually most will supply you with a link that you can download the manual's and tech information and what ever other requirements you might need!

If I can further help you let me know, I will be happy to look up the information for you when I can and supply some links that may help. Remember tho I would need the information about your computer and or laptop serial numbers/ model numbers/ make/ motherboard identification / etc

Determine if the laptop battery is defective. While less than 1 percent of batteries are defective, the possibility is still there. If the battery is new and only charges some of the way, it may just require a BIOS update to charge fully. New batteries that refuse to charge at all may be defective. Purchase a new laptop battery to replace the defective one.

Test the laptop power adapter to see if it's faulty. Run the laptop directly from the laptop power adapter and without the battery. If the laptop does not work with the adapter plugged in, the adapter is dead and you will need to replace it. The laptop battery may refuse to charge if the adapter is faulty. Insert the laptop battery into another laptop to test it. If the laptop battery charges in another laptop, the laptop's motherboard may be bad. Replacing a motherboard in a computer can be very expensive. If the cost to fix the computer is not worth the cost of replacing the motherboard, consider purchasing a new laptop.

Reinstall the battery to ensure all connectors latch properly. The latch mechanism that holds the laptop battery should click into place. If the latch does not close, remove the battery and examine the compartment for signs of damage.

Troubleshoot the BIOS to determine if there is a hardware problem. Turn on the laptop and immediately enter BIOS setup by holding down the "Del" and "F1" or "F2" keys, depending on the make and model of the laptop. When the BIOS screen appears, see how long it takes for the battery to charge down. If the battery does not last as long as the BIOS setup, a hardware failure may be the problem.

Know If It's a Failed Processor or Motherboard Diagnosing computer hardware problems can be one of the more difficult aspects of PC repair. If your motherboard or processor have failed, often your computer will not fully boot up, which makes troubleshooting a frustrating process. Your motherboard runs a program called Post, which essentially checks your essential computer components for errors upon start-up. Post will provide a series of beeps that can be used for error reporting and to help you determine what is wrong with your PC.

Motherboard or the Processor is Bad in a
Diagnosing the source of a computer problem usually involves a process of elimination, evaluating each part. In a desktop computer, this is easy, since each part can be removed or replaced with little difficulty. Taking apart a laptop isn't quite so easy. Unlike a desktop computer, they aren't really designed to be disassembled by the average consumer, and in many cases, taking apart a laptop can void its warranty.

How to Diagnose Without Disassembly
Obviously, since disassembly of a laptop is beyond the skill of most users, diagnosis of hardware problems requires the ability to recognize common problems that can be caused by specific computer parts. Overheating is usually a sign of a failed fan or heat-sink, rather than a problem with the computer's processor. Constant crashing is a sign of bad memory much more often than a failed motherboard or processor. These little indications can be a lifesaver when dealing with sealed hardware like laptops. When diagnosing whether it is the motherboard or the processor, there are a few basic things to look for. Processor damage is usually pretty obvious; the computer will completely fail to operate, unable to even run the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) firmware. This can also be caused by memory failure. Replace the memory with known good memory, and see if the problem persists. Motherboard problems are a little more difficult to detect, as a motherboard is not a single piece of silicon. Typically, a motherboard failure is actually a failure of one of the components soldered to the motherboard, such as the USB controller, or the hard drive controller chips. But often, the problem is with one of the main controller chips on the motherboard, which will cause to the computer to stop functioning altogether. There isn't any good way to discern this from a processor failure, other than to replace the processor; this isn't always possible. b> Problems With Laptop Repair A basic problem with dealing with laptops is the fact that many laptops are built with the processor soldered directly to the motherboard rather than connected with a socket, like most desktop computers. This means that any problem with either the motherboard or processor will require the replacement of both. A side effect of this is that the motherboard and processor will have to be ordered as a single unit; you can't mix and match, and only the parts that the manufacturer of the laptop is willing to supply can be used. To compound the problem, if the laptop is still under warranty, any repairs have to be done by the manufacturer, or a manufacturer-certified repair shop. This often will lead to a cost of parts and labor that will actually exceed the cost of the laptop, especially if the failure is caused by something that the warranty will not cover. Finally, if the laptop is out of warranty, it may be altogether impossible to repair it, as most manufacturers do not stock parts for older machines that they no longer need parts on hand for warranty repairs.

The pc wont boot up and just gives a constant beep and does not stop. What does a constant beep mean?


First you should check which BIOS are you using. This will help in narrowing the diagnosis.

Diagnosis: This is usually caused by a problem with the system memory, or possibly the video card. The memory is more likely--the system complains long and loud if it can't find any usable memory, as there is no way to even start the boot process when this is the case. The motherboard itself could also be the problem.

Recommendation:
Troubleshoot the system memory.
Troubleshoot the video card.
Troubleshoot the motherboard.

My loptop is an Averatec 7100. How can I test the motherboard? I took it to a computer repair shop and they said is the motherboard, I want to know how can I test it on my own.


This is more of a system diagnosis that an actual motherboard testing procedure, but since all components attach to the motherboard in one way or another it could count as a prcess of elimination......

Laptop is dead. How to troubleshoot the problem.
In this post I’ll explain how to troubleshoot a dead laptop and find the problem. The following troubleshooting tips are not model and brand specific, they should work for most laptops.
Let’s take a look at two different scenarios.
Example 1. The laptop is absolutely dead.
When you plug in the power adapter and press on the power button, there is no signs of life at all. The laptop will not make usual noises, LEDs will not light up, the fan will not spin, the screen is blank and black, etc… In short, the laptop is dead.

What you can do in this case?
1. Make sure the wall outlet is working and the laptop DC adapter is getting power from the outlet. Try another wall outlet.
2. Test the laptop DC power adapter, make sure the voltage output is correct. You can test the DC power adapter with a voltmeter.
3. Let’s say the DC adapter is fine and the adapter outputs correct voltage. In this case unplug the power adapter from the laptop, remove the battery, wait for 1-2 minutes, plug in the adapter and try turning on the laptop again.

OK, you tested the adapter and it’s bad. If you decide to replace the original DC adapter with a generic one, you’ll have to follow this rule:
The voltage output on your new adapter has to be exactly the same as on the original adapter. The amperage on the new adapter could be the same or higher.

If nothing helps and the laptop is still dead, apparently the motherboard is fried or there is a problem with the DC power jack. It’s possible the DC power jack is broken and the motherboard is not getting any power from the adapter. In this case you’ll have to disassemble the laptop and replace the power jack.
Example 2. When you plug the DC power adapter and press on the power button, the laptop starts making normal noises, the LEDs work properly but noting appears on the screen. The laptop will not start.
First of all, take a closer look at the LCD screen. Look at the screen under bright light. It’s possible that the image is still on the screen but it’s very faint.
If there is no image on the laptop LCD screen, test the laptop with an external monitor. Connect an external monitor to the VGA port on your laptop and turn the laptop on. You can toggle video output between the internal LCD screen and external monitor by pressing Fn and F4 keys simultaneously on HP laptops, Fn and F5 keys on Toshiba laptops, Fn and F7 keys on IBM laptops. Other laptops may use different key combinations.
Let’s say the external monitor works fine but the internal LCD screen has no image at all. If that’s the case, your problem could be related to the LCD screen or the video cable. Also, make sure the video cable makes good connection with the motherboard and the LCD screen. Try reconnecting, reseating the cable.
In my case, both internal and external monitors were absolutely dead. Neither of them had image. That means the problem is not related to the LCD screen or the video cable. From my experience I know that this problem could be related to the laptop memory.
Try reseating the memory module, maybe it’s not making good connection with the memory slot. Try cleaning contacts on the memory module with pen eraser. Try moving the memory module into another slot. Try replacing the memory module with another known good module, it’s possible that your original module is dead.
If you have two memory modules installed you can try removing them one by one, it’s possible that one of the modules is bad. Try installing different memory modules into different memory slots.

In my case reseating, swapping the memory module didn’t help. I was pretty confident that my problem is not memory related and I moved on.
Try removing battery, hard drive and DVD drive and turning on the laptop without these components.
Also, try turning on the laptop with an external monitor when the video cable is unplugged from the motherboard. If the laptop start with video on the external monitor, apparently there is something wrong with the laptop display panel.
Finally, disassemble the laptop and removed the motherboard.
1. Motherboard. Like on most laptops, in my case the video card is integrated into the motherboard
2. CPU with heatsink and cooling fan.
3. Known good memory module.
4. The power button board witch you need to turn on the system.
5. Working DC power adapter.

Still cannot get any video on the external monitor. The system turns on, the cooling fan starts spinning but there is no video.
At this point I’m 95% sure that the motherboard is dead. CPU failures are not very common, so it must be bad motherboard.

Dead Toshiba A100 laptop computer


In order to replace the power jack in your laptop you’ll have to remove the jack from the motherboard as I explained in the previous post: Replacing DC power jack.
While removing the jack you can accidentally pull out the internal copper coating (I’ll call it a sleeve) from the inside of the “+” terminal as it shown on the picture below.

The internal copper sleeve has been removed and cannot be installed back. If you solder the power jack back on the motherboard without this sleeve it might work but the connection between the “+” lead and motherboard will not be reliable.
In the following guide I explain how to fortify a damaged power jack connection. You can use this repair technique in some laptops with similar power jacks.

Sometimes my Compaq laptop computer screen gets all pink and pixley. It is like a magenta pink. It dosen't do it everytime just randomly but sometime I cannot get it to go away. Sometime when I would...


It sounds as if the culprit here is going to be either the screen itself, or the video card. On a desktop PC, this would be fairly simple to troubleshoot because you could switch out the monitor with one that is known to be working properly. If that did not solve the problem, you would next need to look at your video card. If the computer had onboard video, you could install an aftermarket video card and disable the onboard video.

Unfortunately, with a laptop it isn't quite that simple and you will more than likely have to take the unit to a professional repair service.

BIOS Beep Codes
When a computer is first turned on, or rebooted, its BIOS performs a power-on self test (POST) to test the system's hardware, checking to make sure that all of the system's hardware components are working properly. Under normal circumstances, the POST will display an error message; however, if the BIOS detects an error before it can access the video card, or if there is a problem with the video card, it will produce a series of beeps, and the pattern of the beeps indicates what kind of problem the BIOS has detected. Because there are many brands of BIOS, there are no standard beep codes for every BIOS.
The two most-used brands are AMI (American Megatrends International) and Phoenix.
Below are listed the beep codes for AMI systems, and here are the beep codes for Phoenix systems.

AMI Beep Codes
Beep Code Meaning 1 beep DRAM refresh failure. There is a problem in the system memory or the motherboard. 2 beeps Memory parity error. The parity circuit is not working properly. 3 beeps Base 64K RAM failure. There is a problem with the first 64K of system memory. 4 beeps System timer not operational. There is problem with the timer(s) that control functions on the motherboard. 5 beeps Processor failure. The system CPU has failed. 6 beeps Gate A20/keyboard controller failure. The keyboard IC controller has failed, preventing gate A20 from switching the processor to protect mode. 7 beeps Virtual mode exception error. 8 beeps Video memory error. The BIOS cannot write to the frame buffer memory on the video card. 9 beeps ROM checksum error. The BIOS ROM chip on the motherboard is likely faulty. 10 beeps CMOS checksum error. Something on the motherboard is causing an error when trying to interact with the CMOS. 11 beeps Bad cache memory. An error in the level 2 cache memory. 1 long beep, 2 short Failure in the video system. 1 long beep, 3 short A failure has been detected in memory above 64K. 1 long beep, 8 short Display test failure. Phoenix Beep Codes
Phoenix uses sequences of beeps to indicate problems. The "-" between each number below indicates a pause between each beep sequence. For example, 1-2-3 indicates one beep, followed by a pause and two beeps, followed by a pause and three beeps. Phoenix version before 4.x use 3-beep codes, while Phoenix versions starting with 4.x use 4-beep codes.
