Dell Optiplex GX110 no display + beeps

I cleaned the computer (Dell Optiplex GX110) yesterday. When I was done and turned it on the monitor showed code, in many colors, but eventually booted just fine. Today it had a black and white start-up stuff, but had an error about the memory had changed; proceeding led to the computer being unable to boot up. I opened the machine back up, removed and reinserted the RAM, checked that everything was connected properly, and then tried again. Now the display is without output to display and there are beeps, I think it is one long and then three short. It does that twice. Of the the times I listened to it the CD - ROM drive opened after the beeps. I checked the monitor connection and that did not fix anything. It is plugged into the monitor port that does not have a 2 marking.

I tried removing the CMOS battery and re-inserting it, wich did not work. Another round of checking connections, however, did work. If anyone else has this problem, try unplugging things and reconnecting them.

Turn off the computer and peripherals, disconnect them from their electrical outlets, wait at least 5 seconds, and then open the computer cover.

This is a problem with your memory.

During POST, the computer checks the computer's memory, determines the amount of installed memory, and then writes to and reads from the number of available bytes to ensure proper operation.
Basic Checks:

  • If an insufficient memory message appears, save and close any open files and exit any open application programs not in use.

  • Consider installing additional system memory.

  • Run the System Memory test in the Dell Diagnostics.

  • Reseat the memory modules.

  • Restart the computer.
If the problem still exists after you complete the basic checks, fill out the Diagnostic Checklist as you perform the following steps.
caution.gif CAUTION: Before you perform this procedure, see "Safety Information."
  1. Reboot the computer.
Does the RAM count displayed correctly match the actual amount of memory installed in the computer?
Yes. The computer needed to update the memory count. The problem is resolved.
No. Go to step 2.
  1. Run the System Memory test group in the Dell Diagnostics.
Did any of the diagnostics tests fail?
Yes. Contact Dell for technical assistance.
No. Go to step 3.
  1. Turn off the computer and peripherals, disconnect them from their electrical outlets, wait at least 5 seconds, and then open the computer cover.

  2. Rotate the power supply away from the system board.

  3. Replace the memory module(s).

  4. Close the computer cover, reconnect the computer and peripherals to their electrical outlets, and turn them on.
Does the RAM count displayed correctly match the actual amount of memory installed in the computer?

Non display for Dell Optiplex GX110?

Either your monitor is bad or the video card inside the computer is bad. To isolate the problem try a different monitor on the computer. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker. If the borrowed monitor works, then your original monitor is bad. If the Borrowed monitor does not work, then the video card inside your computer is bad.

Data is not sent to the monitor

The first thing to do is to pay attention for "beep" when your press the power button (or the reset button) to turn the computer on or reboot it. The beeps that a PC makes tells you a lot about the state of your computer. I couldn't quote for you the exact beeps to listen for, but your manual for your motherboard may tell you. Different beep pattersn tell you what is wrong with a computer.

I think for many common motherboards it is something like 4 beeps to tell you the graphics card has failed. Don't quote me, but that is at least along the lines of how it works if not the exact number.

If you're getting no display after starting your computer make sure you hear one beep. Then, listen for other activity. If you're computer has a floppy drive, listen for the 'floppy seek'. Otherwise, listen for hard drive activity. If it sounds as though there's activity along those lines but still no signal/display on the monitor perhaps check the cable between your PC and the monitor. Never hurts to just make sure the monitor is turned on of course.

If your monitor is on, and the cables are connected securely I wold restart the computer again and check for the beeps. I would be certain to count them and check the manual. Your graphics card may have failed if you hear abnormal beeps (more than one as one is usually the healthy indicator). If you hear no beeps then the PC is not even getting in as far as testing it's devices and could quite possibly be a motherboard failure.
