Old longcase clock oak

Have purchases an old oal longcase grandfather clock (brass faces)

1. the case is old and appears to have been both lacquerd and poloshed, also a lot of black dirt on sides which i feel means it has been in a smoke/tobacco environement fot many yers.

2 the brass face appears very old at
lthough in good condotion other than having beed cleaned over a number of years there is a build up of hardened yellow residues in both tje decoration and number.

As far as the wood I would use mineral spirits. and gently clean. do not use laquer thinners it will remove the finish. after you are satisfied with the cleaning you can use old english to give it a new looking finish. old english takes time to dry sometimes a couple of hours.

I purchased a Howard Miller grandfather clock and the clock is keeping time but pendulum is barely moving. What's the problem?

Hi Pam,
I have a Howard Miller Grandfather clock and the pendulum swings very slowly and from far left to far right travels only about three inches at best. It doesn't need to move any more than that to make the "Verge" move the "Escape Wheel" to rotate the gears to keep the hands moving at the correct tick.

How do you remove the brass ring holding the clear clock face so that the clock movement can be replaced?

I found that the brass ring is a push fit and by putting the unit face down so that the glass is supported - I used the rubber washer from my clock (it is in a tea caddy tin). I then applied pressure round the edge of the brass ring until it eventually separated. But be gentle! Good luck.

Not sure if first attempt went through so i will try again. We were moving a sligh grandfather clock and the brass weights fell and the weights inside came out which weights go in which brass?

with most old clocks the weights were a means of moving the gears in the clock instead of using a spring
If I am right , to wind up the clock you pulled one lot of weights down and the weights then slowly changed positions from one up to one down
normally the lh weight is the wind up weight and is slightly lighter the than the rh weight
your problem will be determining the correct weight for the rh side as too heavy and the clock will gain time and too light will loose time

My sterling and Noble westminster chime clock is not chiming. I have brand new batteries installed but still no chime

A handsome clock in solid red oak. The face is off white with a convex lens and a bright brass-toned bezel. The Westminster chime is pleasant sounding while counting the hours.

Runs on 4 AA batteries; two to manage the clock and two for the chime. The external speaker is located at the top of the clock for a clear, unimpeded sound. A button on the chiming unit allows you to control the striking of the hours.

You will see above that one set of batteries does the chime. Make sure they are good and inserted with correct polarity.

As mentioned, look for a button switch to turn the chimes off It is a feature so you can turn the chimes off when you go to bed.

Halo Grandfather Clock won't chime hour

In my eyes there are two kinds, ones that are a real grandfather clock that runs on gravity using a series of weights and gears with different counterweights for chimes and running the clock itself, and there are the show pieces that look like a grandfather clock but run on newer tech and electronics. If a real one then would try first pulling the weights to the top. They are usually shaped into a pinecone or something. If weight is at bottom them have to pull corresponding chain with weight till the weight is at the top of case. As "time" goes by the weights lower. You should have different counterweights for the clock, chimes, dancing figures and whatever else it may have. All the weights move at different "speeds" so you have to keep an eye on them to make sure it keeps correct time. I would recommend consulting the manufacturer if possible. There are so many kinds out there is really hard to tell by such a short video.

I just purchased a Westwood Grandfathers clock and it is missing some parts. I don't know the name of the parts. I need a ilustration and parts manuel for the clock, which was made in Germany. I have some...

That first number sequence is the key: UW 03038 (I think you may have typed an extra digit...)

UW is the identifying mark for "Urgos" - a German manufacturer of high-quality clock movements,
or in layman's terms - the part that houses all the gearing, etc. between its brass plates.

bradshaw0506.jpg

The dial, hands, pendulum, weights, chime, etc. are each separate components that attach to
the "movement."

The Urgos indicia (UW) is followed by a five-digit "model number" for that specific movement.
You can use this information to track down various Urgos parts on the ClockWorks website.

Lastly - a good site for general information/research: Antique Grandfather Clock.

Good luck, and I hope this helps!
