Hard drive failure. Open the case, unplug power wire from hard drive. Power on the system. If everything works except recording, then you have fried hard drive. Replace it, format it, and you are back to normal.
You can erase the contents of the drive or set the drive to overwrite when full. Erasing the drive is the equivalent of reformatting (you will not be able to recover the images easily).
To Erase/Format, enter the Menu system and select Hard Drive Setup (seventh line in the list). Press Enter, then go to HDD Format (fourth item in the list) and press Enter. Then enter your password (set up under System Setup) but the default password is 111111, if it is on. If you entered the correct password, the screen will flash HDD Formatted 3 times. Press Menu to exit the menu. (If the incorrect password was put in, Incorrect Password will flash.)
To overwrite, again go to Hard Drive Setup then select the first item, Drive Full. Press Enter to toggle Overwrite On or Off. You will be able to recover the images until they are overwritten.
You would have to open up the DVR unit to physically see it is plugged in, but the unit's menu under HD or hard drive, should tell whether the unit's hard drive is plugged in. Please let me know if you have anymore questions. Thank you for choosing Q-see.

You need to do a INITIALIZATION/REINITIALIZATION
PROCEDURE See below for details
/* Style Definitions */
mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt;
font-family:"Times New Roman";
If you are installing the DVR,
follow the steps below to initialize the unit as part of the
installation instructions in the Installation/ Operation Manual. This procedure
erases all data on the hard disk drive and is necessary to ensure
that there is no data that could cause improper operation when you try
to use it. With a clean hard drive, the DVR can correctly index recorded
video with the correct time and date. Once the DVR is initialized, you
should not reinitialize the DVR again unless you are having
trouble finding and playing back video, and there is no other solution.
If you have to reinitialize the DVR, make sure the time and date are
correct before beginning the procedure. WARNING:
initialize or reinitialize the DVR: • The hard disk drive is erased. • The password and all menu
settings return to their default conditions. To initialize or reinitialize the
DVR: 1. Press and hold the Function
button. The Function Key List appears. Keep holding the
Function button. 2. Press and release the 0
button, and then release the Function button. Enter the password if
requested. The Setup Menu appears. 3. Using the front panel buttons,
enter 1220. 4. A screen appears and asks if
you want to continue. Use the Search (<</>>)
buttons to highlight Yes or No to erase the hard disk drive, and then press
the Play/Pause button. PASSWORD The default password is 0000. If
you change the password, and then forget it, you can get into
the system by using 2002.
it sound like the system is locked up or your hard drive is going bad. write down all the info on the unit and reset and reprogram the unit. this may solve your problem if not you my need to send it in for repair.
•Factory Reset Hidden Key : Mode Key + CH 2 •The Password and all setting value will return to the initial default value. •Default Password is ‘4321’ .
Try this: Press the power button and hold it for about ten seconds and let the system reboot. Try to use the dvr again. If that was unsucessful try unplugging the receiver from the wall outlet for approxiamately 30 seconds and repower the systen and try again.
If these have not worked You can press menu-6-1-3 and view the system info screen. Go to the details options and select it. Once the details screen loads arrow all the way down until you see the values of which value 9 is the last one. If value 7 is not 4 you need the unit replaced. If all the above did not work the unit will still need replacing as the hard drive has locked up.
Dish has a new receiver called a 222k which has an expansion USB port that will allow you to use an external hard drive to use as the dvr as the 222k is not a DVR unit; it is a HD dual tuner. The external hard drive offers many advantages such as being able to take your recordings on the road, ability to keep recordings if the receiver fails, etc. Another awesome device they have also is called a sling box which will allow remote viewing of your Satellite from a remote location over a laptop, PDA, or cell phone.
I hope this helps you and thanks for using Fix Ya.
The hard drive is bust m8, you should remove the drive and take it to a local computer store and ask them 2 format the drive for you. When they come back and say the drive is unreadable ask them what replacements they have, i upgraded 2 a 160gig for £40.
If the dvr isnt booting the harddrive, then the harddrive isnt seated properly in the removeable harddrive drawer, or the harddrive is improperly formated, or you have the wrong type of harddrive, or the master/slave settings on the harddrive are not set properly (master). what ive found is an 80gig/160gig is the most that these things will handle. and some brands work and some brands don't. and the harddrives have to be IDE/EIDE type drives. but it sounds like a harddrive interface problem. They like the older harddrive formatts/(not xp/vista)....good luck!!!!
