Gateway 450ROG only recognizing 7805 MB of 60GB hard drive
Hi, I'm trying to install Windows XP on a brand new Hitachi 60GB IDE hard drive in a Gateway 450ROG. When the installation gets to the point where you choose the partition to install on, it only recognizes 7805 MB of unpartioned space. When trying to continue, it says it doesn't contain an XP compatible partition. BIOS version is 40.01.04. What am I doing wrong...how do I get it to recognize the hard drive correctly ? Any help is appreciated.

if you have a new hard drive you will have to install the windows operating system from an external source such as a cd drive
go to bios --boot settings and change from 1st boot hard drive to 1st boot cd
install the win os and then you can install the rest
when finished go back to bios and -boot and change back to 1st boot hard drive
I am not familiar with Linux but have you checked your Bios to see if Sata Hard Drive is recognized in there??? Most of the time you have to set the bios to recognize a Sata drive because 90% of Hard Drives are still IDE and most bios software is still recognizing the IDE drives. I know I had to reset everything on my Motherboard and Bios when I changed over from an IDE to SATA Hard Drive.
“No Hard Disk” error displayed on XP install (SATA drive versus ATA/IDE drive)
The two most most popular types of hard drives in personal computers are ATA (also known as IDE hard drive) and SATA hard drives. Many newer computers have SATA hard drives installed, but your computer may have either an (older design) ATA/IDE hard drive or a (newer design) SATA hard drive installed.
After removing Vista, when you reboot your computer, a “No Hard Disk” error may be displayed if your computer has a SATA drive installed. To fix the “No Hard Disk” error, you may need configure your computer’s BIOS settings so that it can recognize the SATA drive installed in you computer. Reconfiguring your BIOS is typically not required if your computer has an ATA/IDE hard drives installed.
Step 1: Activate your computer’s BIOS menu. The first or second screen your computer displays on status may display which key (or keys) you must press to activate your computer’s BIOS menu. You can also look in the index of your computer’s manual for “BIOS” or you can try passing the [Del] or [F1] key when text is first displayed after powering on your computer.
Step 2: BIOS menus vary by computer, but there are seldom more than a few menu categories. Review the “Main” and “Advanced” menu categories to locate your hard drive setting. When you locate the hard drive setting, be sure to note the original drive setting in the bios so that you can restore the original drive setting if your new configuration doesn’t work.
Step 3: Change the drive setting to “IDE,” then save the BIOS settings (usually by pressing the [F10] function key then restart your computer.
If changing your BIOS hard drive setting to IDE doesn’t work, return to step one and restore the original hard drive setting

I have encountered the same problem with yours. But luckily i was able to manage to solve the problem. What i did was, i remove my Hard Drive and install in another pc (working pc) and made it as a slave. After that, i boot the pc then go to My Computer folder, i use the tool Scandisk and set it on automatically fix errors.
After this procedure, i remove the HD and install it back to where it was originally installed. Then I install new OS and it works..
I doubt that it was the virus who made my HD go wrong.
I am running a Armada M700 with a Hitachi HTS541060G9AT00 60GB Hard Drive - Ultra ATA-100, 5400 RPM, 8MB. The driver that is loaded in mine is on both primary and secondary is atapi.sys. This driver is also installed on the Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller, along with intelide.sys. The main difference is I am running Window XP Pro SP2. But I believe that they should use the same driver.

Your Hard Drive is previously formatted and have done different partition provided by your previous machine where you took this hard drive from. Use "The Partition Magic" Software, it will help you to fix and repartition your hard drive in the new format. I have this problem before and now my hard drive can connect with any computer. The key in this issue is any hard drive goes with the original machine has been formatted and do its own partition from manufacturer so if you take it out later for use with other machine, you will need a software to completely rearrange the new partition in universal format so other computers can recognize it. This manufacturer purpose to protect your data from hacking, stealing once you take it out from the original machine. That is why when you connect it to other machine, this hard drive will not be recognized. I has this partition magic software and can make you a copy so you don't have to buy it.
