Question about Canon EOS 40D Digital Camera

No image on lcd

Just got my 40d and there is no image on the lcd to take a picture. works fine to playback. I think this is me just being ignorant, but I'm usually tech savvy. Please advise. Thanks

I've had my 40D for about a year, and during that time, the LCD screen worked fine. Now, suddenly, it stays black. I can call up the menu and photos on the card, but I can't see anything the lens is seeing. The camera was sitting for about a month, and the battery was dead, but I switched to a fully charged battery and nothing happened. I'm at a loss.

The LCD screen worked perfectly for a year, but not it won't come on. It's just black. I can pull up the menu on it, and it does display new photos, but I'm not getting a live view. And the solution offered another owner "enable live view from the menu," doesn't work because there is no live view option on the menu, at least not that I can find. Help.

You need to enable the "live view" mode in the menu, then "set" live view as needed. When you are in this mode the shutter is open and the lens is flipped up to allow the image to hit the sensor and then to your preview screen. Because of this, the camera can't auto-focus, but there is an over-ride mode.

You may find the "video user's manual" links on this page useful to help you find and understand all the functions of your 40D.

Canon 40D playback on viewfinder flashes all white to black. On a wedding gown it is horrible on playback to review.

You're seeing blown-out highlights. These are the portions of the image that have been overexposed so much that all details have been lost and gone pure white. Usually this is a bad thing, and the camera is warning you of it. The proper fix is to reduce the exposure to bring back some of the details. If you simply want the camera to stop the flashing, see page 117 of this manual.

My Canon 40D LCD monitor when displaying a photo has just started displaying white sections of a picture as alternating black then white. The rest of the photo is fine just the white flashes. Any idea what...

It's possible that your Highlight Alert is enabled. Over-exposed areas of your image will blink to indicate blown-out whites. If you don't like this feature, go to the Menu, under the second blue tab (for playback), look for Highlight Alert and Disable it. When viewing the image on a computer, the blinking will not appear however. It's just to warn you that some parts of the image is so bright that all detail is lost. I enable mine so that I know this and is able to make adjustments on the ground.

The LCD screen on my 40D shows the image taken, or the live view image, but there are large areas of missing image. Almost like the picture has been laid on a black background then a large piece torn out...

If the Live View shows areas of total black, the LCD is probably faulty and needs to be taken to a Canon Dealer for repair/replacement. I believe the pictures are still okay on the computer in this case?

How do I have the viewfinder image show in the LCD display

The EOS 350D doesn't have that function (Live View). You need to shoot with the viewfinder. Only later models of D-SLRs have Live View functions (EOS 500D, 50D, 40D, etc). You can however, playback your captured shots by pressing the "Play" button
