Question about Gateway 700 XL (700XLDFM) PC Desktop

2 Answers

Gateway 700XL, yellow light only when power is pushed on.

A friends computer. Green light on MB is on. No sounds..ie(fans,drives processor) nothing. Tried unplugging, removed battery from MB. Nothing. I have another power supply which i can try, and if need to, i can remove a HD from a older machine to test that. Any suggestions, besides off the skyway bridge?

I replace everything inside of my when it did the yellowish act and it still don't power up. It did at first but had a mind of its own and would only come on sometimes. The only thing left for me to do is replace the power switch. Being that I got a new motherboard and power supply, cpu, heatsink, battier that is the only thing left.

You are on the right track. First, swap out the power supply. That normally is the issue. If that's not the issue, verify that the power switch indeed is working. You can do that by determining which color wires are for the power switch, then hold a multimeter set to resistance on the ends of those two wires. When the button is pressed, it should go to zero. If not, then the switch is fautly. That is an unlikely scenario, however. If the new power supply fails to work and the switch is okay then the problem is the motherboard.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya.

Disconnect everything from the motherboard except the power supply connections and cpu fan. Install one stick of RAM and connect your monitor. Then try starting up. See if you get any BIOS boot messages. This will tell you that the board and processor are okay.

With what you say you've tried already, I'm thinking you might have a bad processor. Most every other problem would result in some kind of error like POST beep codes or messages on screen. If the system still doesn't boot with the bare minimum parts installed, replace the processor.

Depending on your processor type and speed as well as ram, to save you a headache go to http://pricewatch.com and order a new motherboard with warranty, cd and manual.

My gateway 700 xl doesnt boot

Unplug the power from you 700xl and from you monitor. Try removing the cmos battery and reinstalling it. Then, plug everything back in and try restarting. If it continues to give you the yellow light, you may need to replace the CMOS battery, especially if it is more than two years old.

Another thing to consider is if your power supply is underpowered for the number of external devices you have plugged into it (i.e., cd, dvd, external hard drives, printers, pci cards, etc). Gateway installed very low powered power supplies in their 700xl desktop computers. Usually only around 250 watts maximum.

If you are replacing the power supply with another 250 watt maximum power supply, and you have a lot of external devices plugged in, you may need at least a 350 watt power supply....if your CMOS battery is not the problem.

2x2 or 2x4 Power Connector Not Plugged In
If the power supply cable with the 2x2 connector or 2x4 connector (depending on your desktop board), is not plugged into the 12V processor core voltage connector located near the processor socket, the system will not boot up. You will see lights onboard and on the chassis front panel and the processor fan will spin, but nothing will appear on the monitor. See figures below for cable placement.
  • Make sure the fans on the processor are connected properly and running.
  • Make sure that the thermal interface material or the thermal grease is applied to the processor properly.
  • Make sure that the power supply fan is running properly and any other external case fans are running properly.
  • Make sure that the air intakes for the external fans are unobstructed and have at least several inches away from walls and other items.

as i think ur processor over heated. or processor can dos not work fine or heat sink not installed properly. remove heat sink, and use heat sink component (a whithe colour gel. u can buy it any computer accessories shop) use it top of ur processor then attached heat sink. and connect processor fan. before installing heat sink check processor fan. then cleare CMOS by removeing battery (because this problem also can happen wrong frequency setting in CMOS setting).

Either the new power supply you purchased is not functioning correctly. But, assuming it is now that you are getting some form of power to your PC, it is very likely the motherboard. Whatever fried your old power supply (or it could have just been the power supply itself) most likely fried your motherboard in the process. Probably not the CPU since the MB can't even post.
