Question about Sony KP-53HS10 TV

Sony KP-53HS10 - Green & pink halos & picture "bowed" on edges

I have a Sony KP-53HS10 that I bought from a friend 3 weeks ago. Has worked beautifully since I got it. No indication anything was wrong with it. Today, when I was watch a DVD, all of a sudden, the picture developed green & pink "halos" (it's like I see 3 separate images layered on top of each other). The picture is also "bowed" on the edges of the screen (like looking through a reverse fish eye lens, if that makes sense).

I've hit the Flash/Focus button over and over and it doesn't rectify the colors. Is there anything else I can try? Or am I looking at paying more to have the TV repaired than what I paid for it? Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!

Thanks for the quick reply. I've never opened a TV before, so how do you tell which parts are the convergence ICs? Do I need any special equipment?

Thanks so much for the quick response. I'll see if I can get all the tools from a friend of mine and give it a try. Now I just have to find the parts for the TV!

You will need to replace the convergence IC's and test resistors on them for bad values , if you want to do the repair yourself
otherwise to have a tech come out and do the repair will be about $300

you would need a soldering iron , solder , solder wick ( for taking off the old solder ( it gets absorbed by wick) and cutters , the IC's will be on a big heat sink ( IC5005 and IC5006 )and the IC's will be labled STK392-020 which can be seen here http://www.nteinc.com/specs/7100to7199/p...

  • jason Dec 12, 2008

sorry you will also need a tube of heat sink compound

  • jason Dec 12, 2008

also hope this info is at least worth a fixya , and if you need me to walk you thru the repair I'll be happy to help

there are electronic parts stores all over and there should be one around you also , I found other ones around me in the phone book , but if you want to order the part or look for a store near you, you can get it from here http://www.nteinc.com/ which alot of part stores get the parts from anyway , also they have a parts distributor list for what ever state and city you may be in or near

I have a Sony KP-53HS10 TV for over 9 years. It still works great, good picture. But few weeks ago, it started making a "ssssssi" noise after turning on 4~5 minutes. The noise might come from a cooling fan...

There are no fan in this tv.This tv most common problems are the dead convergence board parts have problems, picture have colors lines R,B,G out of alignment, have colors shadows, and 3D pictures. The convergence board must have it 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistors to be replaced to solved convergence problems. The problems u discribing,it a starting point, just the convergence problems, have not take it effect yet.Sooner or later ur tv will have the convergence problems.

Sony kp-53hs10 picture is cloudy and 3 colors at bottom of screen red blue and green

Look at attached photo--if it is what you have you have a convergence problem.

The KP-53HS10 uses two of the STK-392-020 convergence chips.

Both will need to be replaced and the set adjusted--parts cost on ebay is less than 20 dollars--repair consists of two things--getting at the parts and then replacing them--chips are soldered in so you need to be able to un solder them and solder the new ones in.

Hi,

Check out CONVERGENCE GALLERY . If you see your symptoms you have a problem in your convergence amplifier circuits. Typical Sony Convergence repair requires disassembly for replacement of 2 ICs, sometimes a fuse or 2, then TV is like new.

It is much more complicated than changing batteries on your remote. Many consumers try unsuccessfully to do a convergence repair. I recommend finding someone competent to do it for a reasonable price. Typical repair shop charges may be from $400 to $650.

If you are in the Calgary area, call me. More reasonable rates.
