Down Load speed drops from 5.2 Mbps to 1.5 Mbps when connected to Apple Airport Express wireless router - version 1.7 software? Can this router be updated with a Mac Book?

Not connecting wirelessly to mac

Thank you for contacting Fixya Support, I am glad to assist.

Depending on what type of Internet service you are using, your Intel iMac comes standard with an Airport Extreme wireless card built in. As a result, if you are unable to connect wirelessly to the Internet, you will need to try this:

- Click on the Apple menu icon, located in the upper left corner of your screen and select System Preferences from the drop down menu.

- Now locate Network from within System Preferences.
- In the side window, make sure you see Airport and check also to see that it is turned on. If it is, then check the left side window to see if the AirPort connection is active.

Keep in mind, your modem or connection router of course, has to be able to provide wireless connectivity, otherwise, if you do not, there will be no need to try connecting via your AirPort Extreme card.

If your network has been physically set as a wireless network, then just turning on the AirPort card in System Preferences>Network will start discovering all networks within its range, including your own network.

So whether you are using an Airport Extreme, Express or a 3rd party (non-Apple-branded) router, you should be able to connect wirelessly.

If you are still unable to connect with these basic steps, here are a few articles you will need to review from Apple Support informational database:
Requirements for wireless Internet access with AirPort
Airport & Bluetooth interference (for connectivity issues)

So here are some basic steps and resources you can try.

If you have more questions please feel free to post a comment.

I hope this information helps.

Hi. just got cable internet (Comcast) and am

that's normal, wireless is normally between 1/4 and 1/2 the speed of your wired connection. normally the router gives priority to wired devices, but this should not cause you any further slow down unless you have wired devices plugged in at the same time you are using wireless. this can be changed from your router's admin page.

Attempting to connect new Acer netbook to existing Mac network

Had the same problem. What i did was in the Airport Configuration program goto "Airport" then to "Wireless" and then to "Wirelesee options" In this menu deselect "Use wide channels". Also i decreased the power of the 5.0 Ghz transmission, because i don't use it yet. But i think the "Wide channels" is the reason of the problem. It is a bit weird thoug, on my Airports Guest acount with no password and incryption, the Acer One loged on perfectly, but on my private network with WPA2 it did not. Aparantly the Guest network does not use "Wide Channels" Hope this helps, but take care, maybe the menu's are called differendly because i had to translate them from Dutch. Good luck.

Apple extreme bridged to apple extreme (Windows network)

Hi,
OK, do you have the latest version of Apple's Airport Utility: Version 5.4.1 (541.9) ?
If you don't, get it... it's got an excellent interface that will walk you through bridging two wireless routers together.
Once you get your hands on it, you will need to choose which airport will be the primary and which will be the secondary. Ideally, pick the one connected to the highest speed and most reliable internet access.
Connect to the secondary airport and configure it as bridge to the primary, the Airport Utility will walk you through it step by step.

Wireless routers

If your connection without the router is only 30 mbps, the speed with which you will connect will never be greater than 30 mbps. Adding the router adds latency, so yes a router will always slow your internet connection slightly. 11 mbps is still pretty fast considering when you are downloading something from a website the average speed is about 270 kbps. My wireless router connects my laptop at 54 mbps, it is a wireless N router, which is faster than a wireless G. That could be another factor.
