Question about HP Compaq Presario SR1420nx (SR1420NXPS69AA) PC Desktop

1 Answer

No power to a SR1420NX.

The machine was off when I went into the office this morning. No power issues on any of the other machines. Pushing the power button on the front does nothing.

There is a green LED on the back of the power supply just below where the power cord is plugged in. It blinks about 5 times a second with the power cord plugged in and about 2 times a second when unplugged. I assume that If I left it unplugged for a long time, it would stop all together.

Is the flashing LED an indicator of some kind? Do I need a new power supply? Or is this normal behavior of a healthy power supply?

Power supply light on or flashes Perform the following steps, in order, until power is restored or it is determined that there is a hardware failure: CAUTION: This product contains components that are easily damaged by ElectroStatic Discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a non-carpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (like a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap that is connected to a grounded surface, like the metal frame of a PC.

  1. Disconnect everything from the computer, including the power cord.
  2. With the power cord disconnected , press the power button on the front of the computer for five seconds. Plug in the power cord and test to see if the computer can turn on. If not, continue using these steps. NOTE: If the power supply fan makes an inconsistent grinding sound or stops and starts erratically, replace the power supply
  3. With the power cord removed, flip the red voltage selector switch to the opposite position. Wait about five seconds, and then switch the red voltage selector switch back to its original location. Ensure that the voltage selector switch is on the correct setting, 115V for North America. Performing this step ensures that the voltage switch is engaged and set correctly for your country/region. Figure 4: Voltage selector switch No power to a SR1420NX. - c00517964.jpg Plug in the power cord and test to see if the computer can turn on. If not, continue using these steps.
  4. Plug a lamp into the same outlet to see if the wall outlet has power. Try the computer in a different outlet in order to eliminate the outlet as a possible source of the issue. Test both to see if the wall outlets have power.
  5. Remove all extension cords, power strips, surge protectors and any converters that remove ground. Plug the power cable directly to the wall outlet. Test for power. If this fixes the issue, find the device that is causing the issue and do not use it. NOTE: If you find the device that was causing the problem was a surge protector, resetting a breaker or fuse on the surge protector may fix the issue.
  6. Remove all attached devices except for keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
  7. Remove any internal component that was recently added, such as video card, memory, CD, DVD, and hard drives. An added device may take more power than the power supply is rated for. If the problem goes away when the component is removed, the only option is to upgrade the power supply to power supply with a higher wattage rating.
  8. Check the power switch:
    1. With the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the front of the PC. The button should release easily and not stick in the socket.
      • If the button sticks, it should be replaced or serviced.
      • If the power button does not stick and appears to be functioning, continue using these steps.
    2. With the power cord disconnected, remove the case or side panel.
    3. Follow the wires from the power button on the front of the computer to their connection on the motherboard.
    4. Look at the power switch cables connected to the motherboard. If the cable has become disconnected, connect the power switch cable connector to the connector on the motherboard. Figure 5: Power switch connector on Motherboard c00517968.jpg
    5. Replace the side panel, plug in the power cord and test to see if the computer can turn on. If not, continue using these steps.

If there is a reset button on the machine try pushing it in otherwsie it sounds like a motherboard problem and you have to consider how old it is and how much a new one will cost. Try another cord if you have one but it is more likley and internal computer problem.

Computer Power comes on, shows compaq first screen, then everything stops. press esc, F10 or F12 and nothing happens. just continues to show the compaq screen. Any suggestions?

Try unplugging everything you can from the computer. Only leave keyboard, monitor, and power cables connected. Then try to turn on again. If computer boots now, then start adding peripherals back one at a time, rebooting each time. when you get the hang, there is your suspect peripheral.

Also, is the monitor itself having issues, or is it the computer? Look at the power light on the monitor, is it staying green, or is turning back to same color when it is in standby state?

Yellow power light on HP SR1420NX

For reasons yet to be determined, your computer is not talking to your monitor.

This could be the monitor cable came loose from the tower (this is our favorite, because it is such an easy repair), or something on the motherboard (that is, anything) that is not functioning and preventing your computer from starting.

Unplug the connecting cable, and plug it back in again, making sure that it is seated properly.

Do you hear any sounds besides the fans? You should be able to hear the faint clicking of a hard drive starting up also. If you hear this, the problem is not in the computer, but in the communication to the monitor.

Good luck
tony

Acer Aspire 5600 wont turn on.

Ther is only one thing that you have not tried I think. Try to remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard for about 15 minutes and reconnect it. It's a small lithium battery.

No power after external power failure

The first thing I have to advise you is to change the Power supply unit. Before buying one change it with another one (probably from a friend's PC) and see if it is working. To remove the power supply unit, you need to remove your tower's case, and unscrew the power supply and remove it. the power supply is the metallic box on top of the computer at the back.
