my camera has a shutter delay, can i overcome it?

Same Problem

Jan 24, 2009

-   My S50 has a long delay when shooting in moderately low light and when using the flash. The delay is not the normal split second delay, but a several (3-5) second delay. On occasion it is so long, I lower the camera to see what's going on and then the shutter and flash go off and capture a blurry image of my feet! In additon, if I'm patient enough, it will capture the subject with the flash, but the image will still be blurry. Frequetnly, the camera sounds like its trying to focus, but can't. -   marcodane

-   I'm trying to take action photo shots at night soccer games and they come out blury and dark. I have a Nikon D70 digital and use a Tamron AF 70-300mm lens when shooting them from the stands but I do have a Nikon 18-70mm lens.-   RDeMarco

I agree with LiZzIe, The camera just needs time to charge the flash and to adjust to the best image. You can turn some things off that will speed up the camera but then you are required to adjust it for the best shot. I think with the lower end powershots they have put more attention into a better quality image then speed. You will need a higher end model for faster shots.

Burst mode will snap some pretty fast shots but you wont have flash and the first shot will have some delay as it sets up.

Things to adjust to speed up the camera are:
Aiaf in the menu off
red eye off
Af asist beam off
review off (most over looked)

You can put the camera into manual focus then adjust the focus to infinity (sideways figure 8) this will take in focus shots at any distance over 2 feet. The camera will not need to take any image calculations with these settings

Most digital cameras, unfortunately, have some shutter delay. Shutter delay is the time between when the shutter release is pressed and when the image is actually captured. Shutter delay becomes more of a nuisance when you are taking action shots or even portraits. The split second difference could mean missing the winning catch at a football game or your baby?s first smile. The best way to find out about a camera?s shutter delay is to try out the camera at the store or review product review web sites. Many people will report on the shutter delay or offer tips for reducing it.
One tip for overcoming shutter delay is to set your camera to continuous mode (if your camera has this mode). You hold down the shutter-release button as the camera takes a rapid succession of shots.
Additional Tip. On most cameras press down the shutter half way so the camera focuses and sets up the picture (exposure etc), keep the shuuter release at this position until the subject is how you want it then press the shutter all the way. Most camera shutter delay is because it takes time to focus the camera and set up the electronics. The shutter will not operate until all this has finished. That why you can miss your shot.

The best bet for this is to shoot in bright light and use manual focus so there is no auto-focus delay. Focus on the area ahead of time, then you should be able to take pictures just as quickly as you push the button. I have the Nikon D60, and by using manual focus and setting the shutter speed to a fst setting (via complete manual mode), I can get any shot I want.

also try lithium batteries and a higher speed card- both can speed up the processing time between shots

jarab... indicated that his solution for
DV-4000 Digital... Problem
is valid for all Nikon Digital...
this model shoots TWICE when you press the trigger, so prepare before take a photo and AFTER that, hold the camera ten seconds in the same position, and wait until the camera fixes the second image that you see in the screen. Using this method I take best photos... The first use of this camera, I release and turn to the floor after press the trigger and the photos were "moving", when I discover this, the photos were best and the camera works well..
(sorry for my english, I am Argentinian).
