It sounds as if you may have more of a problem than I anticipated.  I know of a software package that can retrieve photo's from a corrupt card such as this, including XD.

It has a free demo version.

Card not initialized?

The error can be caused by:

1. The xD-Picture Card or internal memory is not formatted.

2. The xD-Picture Card contact area is soiled.

3. a camera fault

for 1.:

Format the xD-Picture Card or internal memory on the camera (p.130)
To format the internal memory or xD card goto format in the setup menu and chose the correct memory.

for 2.:

Wipe the contact area on the xD-Picture Card with a soft, dry cloth. It may be necessary to format the xD-Picture Card

Yesterday I transferred all my pics from the xd picture card to my computer, nad now I keep getting write error message when I take a pic. The manual says that the card is write protected! How did this...

I don't think the XD card has a lock switch (some do) but what I fully expect is that the memory card requires your to format it to the camera you are using it in. You didn't tell me what camera make or model But you did say you have a manual, look for formatting or it may be called initialize. Formatting clean the surface of the memory card and makes it ready to accept new pictures again.

Clean or format card error on Olympus XD card

There are most likely some "corrupted" images on your xD card. Very often a card reader "writes" data to the card while transferring or copying images into the computer. When you re-insert the card back into the camera, it doesn't recognize the new data (because it didn't create it), and gives the error, usually requiring a complete formatting be performed. There are also problems if you use a reader to rotate images, then re-install the card in the camera. The best way to accomplish what you were doing is to transfer the images into a folder on your computer, as the camera shot them (don't rotate them first). That way, you haven't altered any data on the card. For now, however, I suggest you format the card in the camera, so you can start with a "clean slate". Good luck.

Olympus xD-Picture Card "Card Error"

First things first - need to make sure that the card is making proper electrical contact with the camera. Have a look at the contacts at the edge of the card and make sure they are spotlessly clean - even a fingerprint may cause problems.

Also, make sure the contacts in the camera have nothing causing a contact problem, and see if this resolves the issue.

Regards, Andy

Xd memory card

A card access error may indicate that an xD-Picture Card memory card is in a write-protected condition. xD-Picture Card memory cards have a special protection feature to ensure that your pictures are kept safe. NOTE: During this condition, you can still use the printer for printing and saving photos from the xD-Picture Card to a secure location, such as the computer hard drive. To resolve this error, try the following:
  • Reinsert the xD-Picture Card memory card into your camera and turn on the camera. In most cases, the camera automatically makes the necessary changes.
  • Reformat the xD-Picture Card memory card. See the documentation that came with your camera for instructions on reformatting the memory card. Note that this process erases the pictures currently saved to your memory card. To save these pictures, transfer them to the computer before reformatting the memory card. Once you reformat the memory card, transfer those photos back to the memory card using the computer.
