Question about HP Office Equipment & Supplies

I have a digital phone service and my fax machine (HP Officejet 6110xi) is connected to the input for the modem. I just tried to send a fax and when I hit send the fax machine seems to only pick up 7 digit od the 10 digit number. I don't hear the phone ringing on the recvieving end and each time I get an error message of "no answer", which cannot be correct since it's the fax # for a bank operations center. This didn't happen when IO had a regular "hard-wire" phone service!!!

    There is no "error correction" setting on this HP 6110xi All-In-One machine that I can find. Where would it be located? It's not anywhere to be found in the "Menu" options/settings

Make sure you turn off Error Correction on your fax. Most VOIP cannot handle Error Correction, and some providers forget to filter it out.

    use Error Correction Mode (ECM) ECM eliminates data lost due to poor phone lines by detecting errors that occur during transmission and automatically requesting retransmission of the erroneous portion. Phone charges are unaffected, or may even be reduced, on good phone lines. On poor phone lines, ECM increases sending time and phone charges, but sends the data much more reliably. Turn ECM off (the default setting is on) only if it increases phone charges substantially and you are willing to accept poorer quality in exchange for reduced charges. 1 Press Menu. 2 Press 6, then press 7. This selects Advanced Fax Setup, then selects Error Correction Mode. 3 Press to switch between Off and On. 4 Press Enter to use the selected setting.

Would like to connect a fax but only port 1 or (tel 1) port 2 does not work, should i send back to comcast or reset modem


There is nothing wrong with your modem. Comcast charges extra for a second line. Depending on your model of fax machine, there should be both an input ond an output on the back of the fax machine. Plug the fax machine into line 1 on the modem. Then, plug your phone into the input on the back of the fax machine. If you fax does not have both in and out, then you can purchase a "Y" phone line adapter from your local electronics store.

ps. VoIP is a digital line... Facsimiles are analog signals... Sending analog signals over digital lines is not recomended. If you are wondering "why?" (and understand tech jargon) VoIP is sent via UDP, which is a connectionless protocol (does not retransmit dropped packets) Fax machines use TCP, which does resend dropped packets. This variance in Qualiy of Service sometimes cases strange activity such as both lines (sending and receiving) dropping connections, faxes taking a long time to transmit (due to constant resending loops), etc. It does work... kind of. I would just not assume that faxes made it to their destination until it gets confirmed.

My faxes will not receive because of communication errors

Scenario 1

In the HP Solution Center, click Settings, point to Fax Settings & Setup,
and then click Fax Setup Wizard.

After you have connected the phone cord to the port labeled 1-LINE, run the
fax test again to make sure it passes and the HP All-in-One is ready for faxing.
Try to send or receive a test fax.
Make sure you use the phone cord that came with the HP All-in-One. If you
do not use the supplied phone cord to connect from the telephone wall jack
to the HP All-in-One, you might not be able to send or receive faxes. After
you plug in the phone cord that came with the HP All-in-One, run the fax test
again.
If you are using a phone splitter, this can cause faxing problems. (A splitter is
a two-cord connector that plugs into a telephone wall jack.) Try removing the
splitter and connecting the HP All-in-One directly to the telephone wall jack.

Scenario 2

If you are not using a distinctive ring service, check to make sure that the
Distinctive Ring feature on the HP All-in-One is set to All Rings. For
information, see Change the answer ring pattern for distinctive ringing.
? If Auto Answer is set to Off, you will need to receive faxes manually;
otherwise, the HP All-in-One will not receive the fax. For information on
receiving faxes manually, see Receive a fax manually.

The HP All-in-One might be dialing too fast or too soon. You might need to
insert some pauses in the number sequence. For example, if you need to
access an outside line before dialing the phone number, insert a pause
following the access number. If your number is 95555555, and 9 accesses
an outside line, you might insert pauses as follows: 9-555-5555. To enter a
pause in the fax number you are typing, press Redial/Pause, or press the
Space (#) button repeatedly, until a dash (-) appears on the display.
You can also send the fax using monitor dialing. This enables you to listen to
the phone line as you dial. You can set the pace of your dialing and respond
to prompts as you dial. For more information, see Send a fax using monitor
dialing.
? The number you entered when sending the fax is not in the proper format or
the receiving fax machine is having problems. To check this, try calling the
fax number from a telephone and listen for fax tones. If you cannot hear fax
tones, the receiving fax machine might not be turned on or connected, or a
voice mail service could be interfering with the recipient's phone line. You
can also ask the recipient to check the receiving fax machine for any

Can't receive fax's......how do you set it up to receive...thank you

I want to know how i can use my copy machine to a fax so i can use it for incoming or outgoing?


Install software
Make sure all cables plugged: phone cable, USB cable to computer

Send fax from computer:
- print your document to printer HP .... FAX

Send "traditional" fax:
- put your document into scanner input
- type phone number on HP Officejet keyboard
- push button "Send"

If your HP Officejet if connected to phone line, it reseiving faxes automatically.

Too much noise on the phone line: e.g. bad connection, unshielded phone cable next to a electrical machine (motor!), temporary problems in phone service providers network.
Fax is essential data transmission by beeping noises. If crackling on the line or other disturbances degrade signal quality too much, the data cannot transmitted properly anymore.

Fax systems are ANALOG your cable is DIGITAL, you will have to use scan to email if your printer has that option.

If you have a digital phone service like Vonage or your ISP is a cable company that offers phone service, then you're digital as well, and your fax machine has an analog modem, the two devices will not work unless the phone company puts a filter on that will simulate the analog signal and allow the fax to oeprate normally. Call them and ask them to please initiate the digital filter for your line. I wish HP would come out with a digital modem so the problem can be solved for us $800 all in one customers can use our fax machines again. HP's image is getting worse and worse with lack of solutions, and high dollar fixes they leave up to the customer. A modem swap out should be given to the customers who bought this item and was not told the modem was analog. HP won't do it, they only see $ signs these days.

the 5610 will send & recive with comcast try to do the test from the unit itself. Try to send a test fax to HP 1-888-473-2963 it will send you a return fax

Have to be near fax machine to recieve fax


The Rings to Answer feature might not be set to answer after the
appropriate number of rings for your office setup.
If you have a voice mail service at the same phone number you use
for fax calls, you must receive faxes manually, not automatically. For
information on how to receive faxes manually, see receive a fax
manually from a phone
on page 48.
If you have a PC modem on the same phone line with your
HP Officejet, check to make sure that the modem’s software is not
set to receive faxes automatically. Modems with this auto fax
receive feature turned on will take over the phone line to receive all
incoming faxes, which will prevent the HP Officejet from receiving
fax calls.
If you have an answering machine on the same phone line with
your HP Officejet, you might have one of the following problems:
Your outgoing message might be too long or too loud to allow
the HP Officejet to detect fax tones, and the calling fax machine
might disconnect.
Your answering machine might not have enough quiet time after
your outgoing message to allow the HP Officejet to detect fax
tones. This problem is more common with digital answering
machines.
The following actions might help solve these problems:
a. Disconnect the answering machine and then try receiving a fax.
If faxing is successful without it, the answering machine might
be causing the problem.
b. Reconnect the answering machine and re-record your outgoing
message. Make sure the message is as short as possible (no
more than 10 seconds long), and that you speak softly and
slowly when recording it. Try again to receive a fax.
If you have a special ring pattern for your fax phone number (using
a distinctive ring service through your telephone company), make
sure that the Answer Ring Pattern feature on your HP Officejet is set
to match. For example, if the phone company has assigned your
fax number a double ring pattern, make sure Double Rings is
selected as the Answer Ring Pattern setting. For information on
changing this setting, see change the answer ring pattern
(distinctive ringing)
on page 63.
Note that some ring patterns cannot be recognized by the
HP Officejet, such as those with alternating short and long ringing
patterns. If you are having problems with a ring pattern of this type,
ask your phone company to assign a non-alternating ring pattern.
