Red-eye is caused by two things:  having a light source that illuminates the retina in a way that the camera can see, meaning it is close angularly to the camera lens, and having nice wide open irises to make this very noticeable.  There are four ways to get rid of it while you are taking the picture:
Use a "red-eye reduction" mode on the camera, which is simply a series of pre-flashes to have the subject's irises close.
Move the light source the illuminates the subject far enough away from the lens so that the illuminated part of the retina can't be seen by the lens. That can mean buying a different flash besides the built in one, or figuring out how to bounce the light from the flash off a surface that is far enough away to do this.
Spread out the effective light source surface area - there are cheap little add ons that can do this for you, or use a tissue or other translucent, neutrally colored material in front of the flash.
Don't use the flash.
The last way is to get rid of it on your computer using any one of several software packages that usually include a red-eye removal tool.

is valid for all Digital Cameras
Most digital cameras now come with a built in red-eye reduction flash mode to eliminate or reduce red-eye. If you don't have red-eye reduction you could download a image editor such as Picasa (it's free!!) which also removes red-eye.

The best way to avoid red-eye is to have the flash as far away from the lens as possible. If you can mount an external flash onto the flash bracket, use that instead of a built-in or pop-up flash. Similarly, you can use bounce mode to make the light fall on the subject at a different angle/direction from the lens.
If you can get away with raising the ISO, widening the aperture, and/or lowering the shutter speed so you can do without a flash, you can avoid red-eye altogether.

I just use the Paint programme and then colour the red (or green as in the case of dogs and pets) with the cloning brush

On your DC210 Plus there are 3 buttons next to a screen showing how many picutres you have left. Press the eye and look at the screen until yuo see an eye with an A next to it. This turns on the Automatic Red-Eye Remover. Good luck!

use the pre flash in low light pictures, it gives time for the light to hot the eye and helps prevnet the red eye.

Alternatively just edit it out afterwards. Red eye removal is one of the simplest editing tasks and there are plenty of tools to do it for you (just do a quick search).
