I have sewed on this machine for years and love love love it. Just lately when I switch things to zig zag it still just does straight stitching.

Bernina 700 has stopped working after some 30+ years of trouble free service. To get the motor to turn over I now have to turn wheel but the speed is really slow and laboured. Looks ok inside always been lovingly cared for - can you suggest anything please

Basically it is a matter of a stuck part. Flip open the top by prying up on the front or ends of the lid. You already noticed the hinges on the back. When you get it open, exercise the right hand lever on top (marked ZZ at bottom and 1-20 at top. If you look just to the right of this lever against the back wall you will see that it moves a little part back and forth into triangle shaped grooves. The part is not going completely into the grooves so drop some oil in there and exercise it a few more times, using your fingers if necessary to make the part move into the triangle grooves at the front and back. After a while it will loosen up where it should operate by itself smoothly . Hope this helps.

Thanks so much!
I had the same problem and that was what was wrong.
It took us a while to figure out wher the lubercation needed to be (probly just a duh thing for us ) but it was in between the triangle area and under the bar that moves, then move 10 or so time back and forth. Walla good to go perfect.
What a blessing

RickE1 is exactly right. I just found this problem with my Mom's machine, and it was exactly the little flipper piece that moves back and forth. It would not fit all the way into the triangle notches, and needs a little push with a fingertip to seat the part completely. I oiled it lightly. Hopefully it will loosen up so that it does not need the little bit of extra help to seat the triangle pieces fully into position.

I had the same problem and as stated above, I oiled the gears that control the zig-zag stitches and played with the parts involved, and it started working again. (Bernina 830)

Agreed with RickE1, often customers forget to move the On/Off Automatic Pattern Lever back down when they change their stitch patterns. It's possible your lubricant has dried up, but presumably you've just forgot to adjust this lever.

I cant get my stitch Width Zig zag knob to turn om my bernina record 930. Any one have this problem?

Most likely because your machine has not been serviced (oiled & cleaned) in a long time and the old oil has turned to glue and seized. This is probably the most common problem with mechanical sewing machines. A mechanical sewing machine should be regularly maintained..ie every 40 hours of sewing use or at least every six months when not in use. You may want to take it to a Bernina service technician. Ask for a bottle of Bernina oil for CB hook machines and ask if they will show you how to oil it.

Resolve the problem of not being able to Zig Zag on the Bernia 830. Ever4ything else works fine.

If you take the top off you will see the lever that connects with each cam, you can undo the screws on the cam and move it to make sure the lever is completely on the cam you want, if you have a nylon cam it may have splkit.

My Bernina 1130 has zig zag problems. I have to turn my machine on for 10 minutes before it will even sew. When I sew straight it will skip a few stitches every inch or so. Now it will not zig zag mo

here are some suggestions
Skipped stitches
1. The needle is not inserted correctly
Remove needle & reinsert needle( flat side towards the back of machine)
2. The needle is damaged
replace with new needle
3. The wrong size needle is being used
Choose a needle to suit the thread & fabric
4. The foot not attached correctly
Check & attach correctly

I really recommend having the sewing machine checked to
see if there is a internal problem, since you have to wait 10 minutes
before sewing & the problem with the zig zag & looping.

I have a Bernina 830, the older original one which is not computerized. My zig-zag does not engage. When I turn the knob selector, it turns and the needle does move back and forth. But when I sew the needle...

Take your machine in for service.

Bernina is the only brand that holds value and anything you try may damage the machine.

Take the machine to an authorized Bernina dealer for service.

Zig Zag Stitch not working

THis problem occurred as I was sewing on Neoprene. I was using Gutterman all-purpose thread and a size 80 needle. Tried switching to a size 70, then to size 90. Still unable to zig zag. After inserting a test sample of cotton, the zig zag worked perfectly, so I knew it was not a mecahnical problem. I switched needles again. This time to size 90 for stretch fabric. Voila! Problem solved.

Sewing Machine Problem

Check to see if the cam stack gear does not have a crack in it. The other problem is the cam engager lever is does not engage the cam stitches because it is gummy. To solve this, lift the lid and follow the lever to where it make contact, add a penetrant oil. More the lever back and forth as fast as you can and work the penetrating oil into the area. It should click back and forth and snap between the back and front V's. One is for the zig zag and straight stitches and the other is for all cam patterns. Once it is clicking and snapping back add regular oil. Thensew out your pattern stitches. If the machine binds then you could have a cracked cam stack gear and has to be change by a Bernina service center.
