Slow computer and locks up - PC Desktops

Posted by on

  • S-TW Jan 31, 2009

My PC started running extremly slow then locked up. I restarted and it will run 5 to 10 minutes and lock up agains.

I opened the case and a heat sync had fallen off, It was secured with two hooks on the mother board. I put the heat sync back in place but the PC is still doing the same thing. When it starts, everything is real slow until it locks up. I have run virus scan with no errors.

I am suspecting power supply or the heat sync problem caused damage to the chip is was attached to.

A very good way to speed up a slow computer is to get a copy of "Fix it Utilities" either online or at your local office store. This program cost about $40 dollars but can be used on three computers and does a wonderful job. If you get the program it has fuctions to defragment the registry and hard drive, remove bad links from the registry, optimize boot, and optimize system settings this greatly improves a sluggish computer.

Sounds like a complete new install of windows is in order. Sounds like you may have had a very bad virus that has messed everything up. But very well could have been something else things like this are not always the result of a virus

Emachine when i turn it on says press f2 to start setup but ive tried it but it wont do anything why?

Some keyboards have an f-lock key that you enable quickly as the computer starts to boot. Only then will the F2 button work. If you are too slow to hit the f-lock key the computer will boot past the time window that allows you to enter the setup.

Pc is very slow

You can speed up a slow running PC by:

-- cleaning system junk
-- optimizing computer services
-- optimizing internet
-- repairing registry
-- defraging registry
-- clearing browsers junk

do these things with some secure tool such as Intel Software Partner Reginout.

Thank you..

Is there compatibility between Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials? Can they work together?

Hi pedroberto,

No you can't have both software running at the same time as it might cause conflicts (lock ups, some programs not responding or system slow down). It is recommended that you only have 1 security software running or installed in a computer. to avoid future issues with your computer.

Hope this helps.

Runs slow on video downloads

Hello Sir,

downloading speed depends on internet connection not on PC specification.

If your transfer is low then downloading will also be low.

Take note that source from which you are downloading also must have reliable connection.

My hp pavilion a800n's fan won't turn off

It is possible that your computer is simply overheating causing it to slow down. There are a few ways to check this. Enter the BIOS and go to the hardware monitor, what temperatures does the computer read both for the CPU and the Motherboard? Another option is to install and run a program called HWmonitor that can be found here. Report back when you can.
