A few weeks ago, my MyBook Home edition (which had been running perfectly up until then) stopped working. It is no longer recognized in my computer and the front light flashes rapidly. Thinking it might be an overheating problem, I unplugged the drive and left it overnight. The drive has not worked since. I have downloaded all of the software upgrades from WD to no avail. If I plug the firewire connection in, the light stops flashing.

I also realized that Windows XP SP3 was installed on the same day, which leads me to believe it may have been a compability issue. I have since removed SP3 again, to no avail, the drive is still not recognized.

I downloaded some data recovery software which was supposed to be designed to recognize warranty drives (drives not recognized by operating system). Again, it is still not found.

Last night, I plugged the firewire cable in (it has been connected with USB from day 1). I received a, "New hardware not recognized, device has malfunctioned" message. I have no idea why after everything that I have done, this decides to do this. I have yet to find out why this is doing this, but I have noticed that many people have similar problems in and around the same time frame. Coincidence?

Just an FYI for anyone else with a similar problem. I had my buddy look at it and it was discovered that the problem was with the power cord.
If your hard drive is still under warranty, call WD and ask that they send you a new power cord. It worked for me instantly.

Worth trying anyway,

Allright!!
I dont know if this will work for everyone.
Regarding my previous post i had taken the hard disk out of the enclosure and plugged it directly into the motherboard via sata to no avail.
I then decided to put it back in for enclosure and thought i will try it again.
In device manager i realised the hard disk kept trying to refresh inself and would cut off before it got recognised....playing with the enable/disable option i managed to (somehow) get the drive working(cant explain how yet)
But it worked long enough for me to make my backups.
So i would recomment trying to play around with device manager....might get it to work.
Also its intresting to know that if you try to claim on the warrenty using the serial number on the enclousure you get only one year warrenty but if you open it and enter the serial number printed on the hard disk itself you get a longer warrenty.....
Hope this helps
Good Luck

Mybook WD25001032-001 keeps on flashing and won't work...what is wrong with it. I need help. Thanks

Hello,

Try plugging the usb cable on a different port on the computer. If the light flashing is red, then there is a hardware problem on your WD. If this is still under warranty, then its best to have it checked from where you bought it or to any authorized WD service center. If its no longer under warranty, then you can open the WD and check for any disconnection. The inside contains a harddisk; you may want to disconnect the two connectors from the harddisk and reconnect them again.

WD ELEMENT DOESNT POWER UP. GREEN AND BLUE LIGHT FLASHES

Have you contacted WDE.. by email,or, phone? Seems like that the hard drive has had its bios info corrupted , due to possibly hooking it up to the pc(in the wrong order), or even, a power surge that you were not aware of... The Manufacturer can send you a link to upgrade/restore the harddrive bios...

I think you have burn your power supply coord! Sometime powercoord have the same plug but the voltage are not the same laptop run sometime at 18v when hd is at 12v. On your HD look arround the power coord hole, you should be able to find wich voltage you need to operate it!

sounds like you are using the wrong power supply. Check the amp output on the power plug you plug into the wall make sure its the same as the amp input of your external harddrive

Connecting my external 320 to my laptop but its just flashes

Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the MyBook on a different computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit.

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

WD my book making faint ticking noises and flashing

it is possibly because the usb port you are connecting to is not receiving enough power to power the hard drive and use it at the same time. try another port or check on another computer else probably have to buy a new one
