The agitator on my top loadGE washer is only working part of the time. There are times when I here the machine making strange noises and I open the lid and kind of twist the agitator and it gets going full speed again. Now it is gettting worse and it don't move as fast. I have also opened the washer after the cycle is complete and the clothes are completely soaked. The spin cycle didn't happen or didn't work. I then twist the dial completely around back to spin and manually "help" it to start again.
Are these 2 seperate problems? Does anyone have experience with this? I have read some of the posts about replacing agitators, just wondering if this will solve my problem. I just got laid off and would prefer fixing the problem myself.

the agitator shaft could be stripped out. does it sound like the motor is working during the wash cycle or is it just idle? This is a common problem with ge washers the agitator strips out on the transmision and needs to be replaced.
To check the agitator. Start the washer into wash cycle. Once started Push down on top of agitator. If it catches some times or all of the time when pushing down, then then doggets are worn, under the agitator. You`ll have to remove the agitator to see these. If by pushing down on the agitator, nothing changes, Then you probably have a transmition problem. Check this and let me know what you find.
