Can someone walk me through all the downloads i need, where to get them from & walk me through the actual process of getting root access & jailbreak my g1 (By jailbreaking a device, you free it’s file-system from lock-down, allowing you to add applications and fiddle with your mobile phone as you see fit.). So I take it getting root access & jailbreaking is the same thing.

I've done all this (see below) & when I hit connect, I get the following error message: error while connecting to server: (the ip address i typed in) - connection refused. then i get another message that flashes another error message saying, "error while receiving from server: null"

  • First off, you’ll need to download two files to your desktop:

  • Download and install the Android Telnet Client from the Android Market
  • Download and install the Terminal Emulator app from the Android Market
  • Turn on WiFi and connect to your WiFi network
  • Now, go back to your downloaded files on your desktop

    • Decompress the file
    • Extract “recovery_testkeys.img” to your desktop
    • Rename “recovery_testkeys.img” to “recovery.img”
    • Rename the modified Android OS RC30 update file from “” to “”

  • Transfer the newly named “recovery.img” file and the newly named “” to your microSD card (you can use the microSD card that came with your G1)

    • Put microSD card in your G1 (if it’s not already in there)

  • Fire up “Terminal Emulator”

    • Type “cd system” and hit Enter
    • Type “cd bin” and hit Enter
    • Type “telnetd” and hit Enter
    • Type “netstat” and hit Enter
    • The IP address you want is listed on the same line as the word “Established”
    • Write down this IP address
    • Close Terminal Emulator (hit the “Home” button)

  • Fire up “Telnet”
  • In the IP address field (it should show “localhost”) enter the IP address you wrote down

    • Hit “Connect”

  • I get the following error message: error while connecting to server: (the ip address i typed in 192......) - connection refused.

then i get another message that flashes another error message saying, "error while receiving from server: null"

Hi There, I just bought an G1 phone that is rooted, unlocked and upgraded to Froyo 2.2.1 and I have no sound. No ring-tone sound, no messages sound, no video sound mp3 etc. What should I do to fix...

Since you are rooted, you can load a custom ROM that has ringtones. A popular ROM for the G1 is Cyanogenmod. An easier way to get ringtones onto the phone, however, is to simply put whatever video and ringtones you want onto a microSD card and load it into the G1. Once you load the microSD card, the ringtones will be available in Settings -> Sounds and the Videos will show up in the Video application.

I have a g1 and it downgraded to 1.0 how can I upgrade it without a manual update

How to Update G1 Phone Firmware RC33

    1. Download RC33 update from Google here.

    2. Rename the download file from to, and place it at the root i.e the very top directory of your Micro SD card. (If you added the file to your microSD card by connecting the handset to your computer via USB [rather than using a dedicated microSD card reader], make sure to unmount it and disconnect the USB cable now.

    3. Turn off your G1 Make sure it's completely powered off. Now again turn it on by holding the Home+End keys until you see T-Mobile G1 logo.

    4. From the icon screen, open the keyboard and hit Alt+L.

    5. Press Alt+S to begin the update. Remember, the update needs to be in the root of the Micro SD card and needs to be named

    6. Once it finishes, follow the onscreen instructions and press Home+Back to finish.

    7. G1 Phone will reboot a few times to flash different parts of the firmware.

If all went well, you should now be running the latest update, RC33. Enjoy your new, shiny RC33 update, complete with Google Latitude!

To make sure all your hard work wasn't for nothing, hit Menu > Settings > About Phone > scroll to Build Number. You should see RC33 in there somewhere.

Call up tmobile, do not tell them you have a rooted phone or that it was modified in anyway, otherwise they will blame it. They will be able to help you get it working by modifying / adding some settings in your phone.

Phone doesnt want to turn on, it is stuck on a rainbol screen

if your phone is not rooted (you dont have root access) then you just need to load either DREAIMG.nbh or an official t-mobile onto the sd card (not in a folder) turn on the phone while holding the camera button (this will get to to the rainbow screen when your phone is working) and it should have instructions (push power button to apply update) if it doesn try just pushing the power button and it should start updating. if that doesnt work, take it to a specialist

G1 mobile asking google username and passwords

G1 phones are set up to be used with a G1 data feature available from T-Mobile. This isn't optional and If you choose not to subscribe to this data feature, you will not be able to use the phone regardless of if you have a google email account or not. The phone is basically a paper weight without it.

    Just brought a g1

You must also subscribe to a G1 data feature. If you don't have a data feature on your account the phone is essentially a paper weight.
