This varies alot between different monitors. But almost every monitor i have worked with has an option to do this. If you push the menu button on your monitor then look around for an option that says "restore defaults", "defaults", "factory", etc. select this by pressing the ok button on your monitor or whatever the button is for selecting on your model. Your defaults should be restored.

I have a dell studio 540 desktop, I need to restore to factory settings but my monitor will not stay open. It opens for a few seconds then immediately goes into power saver mode and turns off, how can

I see two things here, but need clarification;

1) Monitor goes to Power Saver Mode, then turns -> OFF?

Sure that monitor didn't go into Standby Mode?

2) Why are you performing a restore back to factory settings?
Pick up a virus?

Primer;
The monitor receives a signal. A video signal. The video signal comes from the computer.

If the monitor is NOT receiving a video signal, then the monitor will state No Signal.
This is for older monitors.

New monitors do not state No Signal anymore.
It's Power Saver Mode, or Sleep Mode.

If the monitor is truly OFF, the Power On button will Not be lit up.
Or the Power On LED light on the monitor.

Monitor power on LED is lit, or Power On button is lit?

Monitor is not receiving a video signal;

Use a monitor cable from a KNOWN to be working monitor, for a temporary test.
OR,
Use a Known to be working monitor, and it's monitor cable.

Need to find out if monitor cable is good.

Monitor cable checks out good?

Then problem is computer.

The two leading issues with desktop computer failure, is;

1) Computer is dirty inside
2) Power Supply inside computer is bad.

How to reset to factory settings for e machine T2878

Use an external memory device such as a DVD, flash drive or external hard drive to back up the data you need to save from your eMachines computer. Any data that isn't saved to an external source will be erased when the computer is restored to factory settings. Remove any discs that are in the optical drive and unplug the computer's peripheral devices, such as an Ethernet cable or scanner. Do not disconnect the keyboard, mouse or monitor. Click the Windows "Start" menu and choose "All Programs." Navigate to "eMachines" and choose "eMachines Recovery Management." Click the "Restore" tab. Click "Password Settings" if you have not already set a recovery password. Type a new password in the text box and click "OK." Click "Restore System to Factory Default." Type the recovery password and click "OK." Click "Next" to wipe the eMachines computer's hard drive and begin the recovery process. Select "Finish" and wait for the eMachines computer to restart. Use the series of installation prompts that appear on the screen to create a new user account for your operating system, set the system date and time, and set up your Internet settings.

Compaq monitor auto adjusting

Press the button labeled "Auto" on the front of your Compaq monitor. This runs an automatic configuration utility designed to examine your current settings and adjust them to reach the best possible picture quality.

This utility will take only a few seconds and will adjust things like the sharpness, brightness and resolution of the image being displayed. Press the "Menu" button on the front of your Compaq monitor to adjust your monitor's screen settings manually in the event that the auto configuration utility has not done so to your liking.

Navigate to the "Picture" category of your Compaq monitor's on-screen menu to adjust settings like "Brightness" and "Sharpness." These settings can be useful if your monitor is displaying an image that is fuzzy or too dim.

Use the "Color" setting to adjust the amount of red, green and blue that your monitor displays. These settings can be useful if your monitor is displaying too much of one color or not enough of another.

Use the "Default" menu option to reset your Compaq monitor to its original factory settings. This changes any settings you have altered back to the way they were set when the monitor left the Compaq factory

hope this helps

Compaq blank screen

Ok, either your monitor is broken or mabye:

Your Graphics Card has been interfered with and is not sitting right. Try:

Making sure every cable is attached correctly and try a second cable just in case.

Opening your computer and checking that the graphics card (If it is a card) is correctly sitting in its slot and is not loose.

The fastest way to find out if its the graphics or the monitor is keep the monitor on and boot up the computer. Press F2 (It could be a different button, eg:delete) to access the BIOS, If your display seems fine, obviously its your card, if not, it's the monitor.

If its the gfx card, try to roll back its driver to its factory settings if possible, or try to install a newer version.

If its the monitor, read the post the author made in the youtube video, monitors is unfortunatly not my strong point.

The lcd monitor does not have a picture and will not shut off when it has power.

§ Turn Off the Monitor.
§ Unplug all the Cables from the back of the Monitor.
§ After unplugging all the Cables press and Hold the Power Button at the Front of the Monitor for 20 Seconds.
§ Plug all the cables back.
§ Turn it on.
§ See if you get the Picture on the Monitor.
§ if you don’t get any Picture then.
§ Unplug the Cable which is connected at the Back of the CPU.
§ If you get the Message "No Input Signal” or "Check Video Signal" it means that Your Monitor is Fine.
§ Try doing the Factory Default settings from the menu Buttons at the Front of the Monitor.
§ If you don’t get any Message then it means you Monitor has Gone Bad and Needs to be replaced.
