You need to get any important data off that drive ASAP if you can. The ticking noise your refer to is the sign of a Failing Hard Drive.
It gradually get's worse the more the PC is in use, so if you can try and copy stuff off it onto Discs or another Drive if possible.

And yes, you can actially do what Mookid said, not sure if it's the same way as I know, which involves removing the platters from the "dead" drive and moving them to another hard drive, but unless you really know what your doing it would not really be worth the hassle if you can get data off the drive some other way.

Is this a toshiba drive? I had a similar problem and was able to fix this by taking apart the drive and using the harddrive as a internal one on my computer. Not ideal, but it works at least.

The tic tic tic noise is known as the tic of death. This hard drive is faulty especially when you go into the BIOS and the hard disk is not detected. This is why when you try to install Windows it cannot detect a hard disk.
The hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

The HDD makes a tic tic sound when connected to the computer but doesn't appear in the explorer.....

When a hard disk makes a clicking sound and the computer does not detect it then the hard disk is faulty. This is commonly known as "The click of death".
There is no way of fixing this hard drive, if you need to recover your data, then there are companies that can recover data off faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

My computer does not see my external hard dive

Go to this webpage (Seagate) http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/ and choose from the SeaTools and FreeAgent Drivers that are appropriate for your OS and particular model. Formatting the harddrive should not have caused this problem of not being connected, but it is possible there was a piece of software that communicated with the computer that was removed via the format.

Unfortunately it may be that way Jake. The funny sounds may be from the needle on the hdd. Seek out a local computer store and ask them to troubleshoot it. Unfortunately I think it may be broken.

I can't download from my FD device to my computer

Make sure that your power supply is ok, I mean to say that check the connction. If it is ok then check that you are giving the actual power input to your hard drive. Don't connct the hard drive again. First check the power supply to the wall is having the same out put that required by the hard drive as input. Let me know the result.

Simpletech 320gb hard drive

the hard drive inside of the external device is damaged. probably the drive head scratched one or more of the platters inside of the drive. this is a common occurance with laptops and computers when they take a dive off of a desk.

need to either get a replacement drive or another external hard drive.
