You need to get any important data off that drive ASAP if you can. The ticking noise your refer to is the sign of a Failing Hard Drive.
It gradually get's worse the more the PC is in use, so if you can try and copy stuff off it onto Discs or another Drive if possible.

And yes, you can actially do what Mookid said, not sure if it's the same way as I know, which involves removing the platters from the "dead" drive and moving them to another hard drive, but unless you really know what your doing it would not really be worth the hassle if you can get data off the drive some other way.

Is this a toshiba drive? I had a similar problem and was able to fix this by taking apart the drive and using the harddrive as a internal one on my computer. Not ideal, but it works at least.

My Dell desktop computer will not boot and it is too old to spend money on repairs. However, I would like to be able to get the files off my hard drive. If I buy a kit and turn the internal hard drive...

Nope. you cannot access your files. even if you use a external hard dive to access the files.

i suggest you install windows 7 in your computer but do not reformat the hard disk . in that way your files will still be saved in your harddrive.
Once you have access to your files i suggest you save them in a flash drive or external hard drive if you have one. then reformat your computer and install a windows xp.

here is a tutorial on how to install windows 7 without reformatting your harddrive.

Goodluck. If you have any success using my solution please give me updates.. Thanks

How do I down load to an external drive and not the main computer

First Solution:-

1. If you have copied a particular game's folder to the external drive, go to Start menu > Programs.
2. Right click on the file name of the game.
3. Click on "Properties"
4. Go to "shortcut" page and change the "Target" path directing the EXE file to the folder in the external drive where you have copy-pasted the your game.
5. Click on "Apply" and "OK".
6. Now, try to start the game, and you should be able to play.

An alternate solution is given below.

In both the cases (internet game / purchased games):-
1. First plug in the external hard drive to your computer.
2. You will have to run the installation file of the game (both purchased and internet download) and select the folder path directing it to the external hard drive.
3. For some games, you may have to uninstall the existing game first to re-install and select the desire folder path (external drive).
4. Games will be installed in external drive and also available in start menu > programs > "your game".

Happy gaming! :)

Missing file or corrupt windowssystem32 hal dll how to fix if I can't fix it can I do a full system restore with an xp disk and driver disk from another computer?

You can put in your Windows disk and boot PC from the disk drive and then select to repair, this will not format your PC and will replace your hal.dll file. fixing windows and keeping your personal files.

Usually this works, but if it can't fix the problem it will tell you then give you a format option, at that point turn off the PC, take out the hard dive, hook it up to another pc as a slave or external drive to back up your files, then put the thing back in your pc and format.

but try to use the repair option of your windows disk. there is hardly ever an actual reason for people to format

this computer has an integrated sound card, which means it is integrated in the Motherboard.
If you have a driver cd that came with the computer, reinstall the audio dive drivers.
If you don;t have the CD,

Go here and download the driver.

Provided you have an external Hard Drive connected to your computer, you can download directly to it without a problem.
