Faxing - document feeder sends the paper through and continues spinning like their should be more papers to feed and there are not - then the red status light comes on. It will fax from the flat reader after I turn it off and back on.

There was a staple caught in the exit guide on the underside of the top lid. There must be a sensor in this spring loaded guide. I removed it and problem solved.

Sounds like a sticky or bad sensor in the feeder. does it come up and say doc. jam? there is one sensor i had problems with that caused that. it is the sensor that tells when paper is on tray of feeder. if you look where you set paper to feed in, you can see a black lever. its actually mounted on center of tray. it might be sticking down after it feeds last sheet in. it should spring back up freely. if that looks ok, there are a couple of other sensors in feeder, but not that easily accessible.

When faxing does paper face uup or down

You load the originals print side uo on the document feeder tray or print side down on the glass.
To send a single page fax you can either load the original on document feeder tray or on the glass; to send a multi-page fax you must use the document feeder tray.

The position of the paper is the same either you copy, fax or scan.
All this is clearly explained in the user's manual, that you should read and you can download from HP support pages for you printer:

Top ADF will not recognize paper in the feed tray.

Try to replace the 'paper is present' sensor with the 'cover open' one to see if now it is detecting the paper. Also, check the actuator that enter in that sensor.

Which way does the paper go into the feed when faxing?

Load the originals, with the print side up, into the document feeder tray. If you are sending a single-page fax, such as a photograph, you can also load the original on the glass. If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Jamming of paper using the Automatic Document Feeder

You may have a really tiny paper jam. You need to open up unit to get access to feeder properly. Use a torch, jams can be so small you can miss them. cheers lilacgerry
