- Thanks Rory

but I tried that and it does not work.

I'm thinking about uninstalling the device, and reinstalling?

if I remove it, will it automatically find the device and re-install it?

or could it be an app issue ie player?

- Windows media player

I also tried the HP player called quickplay

Also just double clicked on the DVD drive in computer

The drive is spinning but it does not reading the DVD, and no icon for the movie appeared as does for CD's.

All CD's work fine.

The drive does play movies, I have hundreds of movies that don't play however I have been able to play 2 or 3, Ninja Turtles being one.

Not my favorite....

I have downloaded all kinds of players divx being one. in attempt to get this piece of (bleep) working.

I have tried HP support but their English is poor and technical skills even worse.

Their solution to everything is to reformat the laptop.

Not my first choice.

Also, when I went into the properties of the DVD driver, it said, that this device can not be started. Code 10. Any idea what that means?

Same Problem

-   Hi, did you manage to solve your problem? I am also encountering DVD problem with my HP Pavilion dv6809us Entertainment Notebook PC running on Windows Vista. The Quickplay version is 3.6. I compared the DVDs that can play against those that can't. The only difference I noticed were that the 3 DVDs (ex Beowulf -Directors Cut) that play currently are UNRATED. I only noticed it happened this March-April 2009 but previously it could play all so I know something changed. I've been using it Jan and Feb 2009 without any problem. I have set it on automatic update so I'm wondering if I should just restore it back except that the Conflicker antidote was also given at this point so I'm kind of stuck. If I restore, it might open my laptop to conflicker attacks. Any advice what to do on fixing my Quickplay without compromising my security?

-   I bought a HP 6000 series Laptop for my Daughter. Her's never read DVD's either from the day we bought it. My daughter has worked with HP on this for over a year with no results from the HP help desk. From all the posts out there it looks like HP never had DVD drives installed in marked as DVD PC's. I'm a Tech I've been doing this for years it's not the software it the hardware. HP should have a Class action lawsuit on their hands about this one. -   metrolobster

Not sure about ripping videos or DVDs, but I can help out on the first one!

Try updating your DVD drive. That worked for me. Especially with DVDs that you might rent from Hollywood Video or Blockbuster.

1. Open "My computer"

2. Right-click on your DVD drive.

3. Select "Properties"

4. Click the "Hardware" tab

5. Click the "Properties" button

6. Click the "Driver" tab

7. Then click "Update Driver..."

If that does not work, let me know.

I have the same problem. CDs are fine but DVDs don't work at all. I tried to load Corel x4 suit from DVD and it wouldn't recognize it. I could hear the drive running but it couldn't fine the disc. Our wedding photos are on a DVD and it won't play this either or any film DVDs.
I've tried updating the driver, but it says that I have the most up to date diver for the device. Luckily we have a home network and I managed to use the DVD drive on the desktop as a shared drive. Both machines are running Windows Vista. The laptop is about 18 months old and the DVD drive worked fine when is was new. I'm not sure when it went wrong, it must be about 6 months ago. We don't play many DVDs anyway, but if software is going to come on DVDs more and more, it will be a problem. I'm due to start a new Open University course in Feb and some of the software may well be on DVD.
