Question about Dyson DC14 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

1 Answer

Loud noise I have a brand new Dyson and it is great on all my floors except one of my area rugs when it starts making this really loud vibrating noise. I am not sure why - nothing is stuck in the roller or vacuum and it doesn't make it on any of my other rugs. Also it is really hard to push whereas all the other floors it just glides. I don't want to return it but I also don't want to hear this sound every time I vacuum.

So is this damaging to the vacuum? If yes, is this fixable?

  • bladelynx Feb 01, 2009

I have the same problem with my new DC14. The vaccum makes a terrible noise on a few areas of my rugs, as to indicate that something jammed the brushbar; but nothing jammed it.

You said:"Instead of returning it, you can purchase accessories for it that will vacuum it better."

What accessories are you talking about? I really like this vaccum, and I would hate to have to return it.

This is the clutch as it jams up in the brush. Usually happens with rugs that are not secured to the floor.

It can be damaging yes. Instead of returning it, you can purchase accessories for it that will vacuum it better. Honestly, Dyson is the best vacuum I have used and repaired. I wouldn't recommend anything else but it. Stick with your Dyson, you can set it on bare floor so the brushes don't spin.

Is there any other information you were looking for? I am not sure why i only got a TFT rating as I fully answered your question and even offered a solution to not return your unit.

My Dyson is making a really strange loud sound. It appears to be working. I just took it apart and cleaned the filter and the wand. When I put everything back together, it started making a heavy whirring...

Check the tips of the beater bar. I "bumped" mine to hard and broke a tip. Still worked! Just noisy. Called Dyson support and they sent me a new one no charge. Note. Mine had a loud whirring and a vibration.

You will need to pull the roller out and clean it. I think some of the strings are tangle up at the end of this roller. (Most rollers will come apart at the end for cleaning.) Make sure that the strings are not tangle up on the belt pulley as well. I hope this will help you.

Dyson making loud noise

If your brushroller isn't spinning it will make the loud sound. Try removing the brushroll and reinstalling it. If this doesn't work, you may need a new brushroller. You can find one here...

Loud noise when I start the vacuum in carpet position

It's most likely the Belt Slip Protection Dyson uses to prevent the user from having to replace belts. I recently bought a Dyson and love it other than it literally sits there and makes horrible noises 80% of the time. I completely disassembled the vacuum and found that the spring they used for this belt slip protection is WAY too weak. The weak spring seems to let the belt slip protection pop off way too frequently and unnecessarily. I stretched the spring back out and whammy no more horrible clanking. Of course it'll take you a couple of hours, some good tools and some serious ingenuity to get to where the parts are but problem solved. It'll still ratchet when picking up a sock or dog toy or something, but sitting there ratcheting on short dense carpet is unacceptable. Hope this helps!!!

Noisy on rugs!

Are the rugs long haired or short haired? Most likely the suction is just causing the noise when it picks up the rug and the buzz saw could be the beater bar hitting the rug then. I actually own a DC14 and it does the same thing and the rugs like to be dragged along. Nothing really to fix this, just the way it is. You could try it with the beater bar raised and see how well it works then but this sounds normal.

Have a good day

Loud noise when I start the vacuum in carpet position

Not exactly a solution, but more of an explanation. The noise is caused by a ratchet device that's designed to protect the belt if the brush roller becomes blocked. It's a bit like a clutch that slips when resistance on the brush gets too great. The noise will occur if there's a solid blockage, of course, but it will also occur whenever the machine senses excessive resistance. This may happen on carpets with really thick pile, but can also happen if the carpet is loosely fitted and can be sucked up tight to the roller by the force of the vacuum.
Small consolation, but the problem should lessen as the brush wears. Meanwhile, if all else fails, switch the brush off (hard floors mode) while vacuuming the problem carpet(s).
