Dell Inspiron E1505 won't boot

My daughter brought me her laptop computer (Dell Inspiron E1505) to fix. It had been acting strangely and she had a friend of hers reinstall Windows XP, which seemed to help for a while. Now it won't boot, the hard drive sounds like it has sand in it, and the setup indicates that there is no bootable drive installed. I told her we just need to get a new hard drive and reinstall all her software. Will any brand notebook harddrive fit this computer, or am I stuck with buying a Hitachi HDD?

I would appreciate any advice.

Try this site to look for hard drives. Not just any drive will work, so make sure you confirm with the company's sales or tech support to make sure it'll work.

Call up Dell or go to the web site and talk or chat with technical support. They can look up the error code and pin point the problem. Your laptop might still be under warranty so don't wait until it runs out you better act now.

Getting a white screen at start up on a Dell Inspiron E1505. If I let it sit it will flicker and come back on after about 15-30 min and will not return to white screen. Is it time to replace the lcd?

Try system recover.
if it happens the second you boot your computer, is the screen dark but the back light is just on, or is it that the screen is completely white?

You need to flash or update your computer's bios. if you have an inspiron 1501 go here:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R174470&SystemID=INS_PNT_1501&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=13120&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=9&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=236967
read the installation instructions or print it. then download the file and follow the instructions. after restart. see if you still get the vertical lines.

Dell inspiron e1505 wont boot

Sounds like you are having issues with the motherboard since we are talking about a laptop here. However, there is a way on how we can isolate that the motherboard is the main problem. Remove the memory by clicking this ---> http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6400/en/om/parts.htm#wp1103163
If in case the system would still act the same, call up Dell with the service tag or express service code to have the motherboard replaced.

Notebook inverter or backlight problem

I have the same type of Dell laptop( I am on it right now). It sounds like your graphics card is going bad. And if you are still under warranty and contact Dell, it is possible that they will come to you to fix it. If you are Not under warranty, it is still very possible to get them to come to you, but of course you will have to pay for services and parts if your computer is still not under warranty.
