DELL B130 - WANT TO REPLACE POWER JACK

Big problem is I can't get the cover off to do the fix - I got the screen and keyboard removed - I seem to be missing a screw or something since one corner with monitor jack, modem jacks i can lift off...any help would be much appreciated; the b130 manual doesn't show how to do this...DW

There really isn't a way to replace the power jack because it is built into the motherboard. The only way to replace it would be either to replace the entire motherboard, in which case you might as well just buy a new computer, or if you were a computer repair technician,

My dell 640m short curcuit.I check uise multimeter at the battery prob +- ( 2 side have a reading).Laptop can't on....tq

1. Test power adapter for output voltage. Bend the power cable in various directions while doing this to be sure that there is no broken conductors in the cable.
2. If power adapter is Ok, connect it & see if the power LED on the laptop will glow when you jiggle the power connector in various directions. If yes, then the DC jack might be loose or damaged, & need to be either re-soldered or replaced.
3. If not, then disassemble the laptop. Remove any components that attach to the laptop's motherboard first (e.g. battery, hard drive, RAM, wireless card, optical drive, ... etc.)
4. Next, remove the keyboard & the LCD screen.
5. Finally, unscrew all screws that hold the upper cover & lower cover together so that you could gain access to the motherboard.
6. Inspect the solder points connecting the DC jack to the motherboard. Make sure that none of them is loose. If any, re-solder them.
7. Inspect the center pin in the DC jack. Make sure that it is not broken or loose. If it is, then you might need to replace the DC jack.
8. When you are done, re-assemble back the laptop.

4 beeps but won't come on

4 beeps of equal lenght suggest that system timer is not working, you need to change cmos battery on your laptop. If you are game, that is how you change CMOS battery on your laptop:

1. Switch off computer, remove power cord and battery, turn computer "proper" side up, open and press power button to discharge
2. Open display in full (180 degree), there is small indent on hinge cover, close to hinge on right and left side, slide in little flat (screwdriver will do) and lift right side up, slide cover towards left and remove it, do not lift on both sides simultaneously!
3. Remove two small screws on the top of keyboard, lift keyboard slightly up and towards you, be aware that keys and tabs on keyboard are fragile and difficult to replace! Lift keyboard connector and slide the cable out. it is not really necessary to remove keyboard, but it easy to replace without keyboard being in the way.
4. Find coin battery, disconnect cable from socket by pulling it gently towards the battery. Remove cable from guides and battery from it's seat
5. Replace battery with exact same type, put it back into it's seat, guide wire through and connect it back to the board.
6. Re-connect keyboard cable, place front keyboard tabs into palm rest and screw back two back holding screws
7. slide in left side of hinge cover into place, press from left to right till it click in place.
8. Re-install battery and power cord, switch on computer, re-programe BIOS ito previous state.

This should solve your CMOS batery problem. Of course you can send your laptop to the technician but that will be no fun at all... ;-)

Dell Inspiron B130 - can you replace the connection for the power source/battery charger? Mine is shorting out and not always charging the battery (new battery, new AC cord and adaptor).

Yes you can replace the power adaptor. You may also remove the solder from the existing adapter and re-solder it back on which is what I did. If you just want to replace it I suggest Ebay before I repaired mine I ordered a new one for $5 w/ free shipping.

Laptop Key repair

I am not sure if BestBuy is authorized to repair Dell systems, but if they will take it, then they should be able to fix it. The fix will depend on the nature of the problem. If the key is simply poped out in some way, they may be able to re-attach it on the spot. If not, they will likely have to order the keyboard part from Dell, open up the notebook (or remove the keyboard) and replace it. On some computers this is easier than others. Most commercial lines of notebooks allow the keyboard to be replaceed easily by the end user without opening the case at all - just undo some latches and remove some screws, pop it out, pop the new one in, screw it down and latch it in. Some consumer systems (Inspiron is a consumer line) are not so well designed. It all depends.

Either way, BestBuy should be able to repair it. If you check with Dell first, you may find that you can even repair it yourself if it is designed to be a "user replaceable" part as i describe above.

Worn power connection

Well, if it's just the soldering points that are weaking then you don't need a new one. Just resolder those points (probably won't even take any extra solder but i would recommend giving it a little more so it doesn't just break again) and you should be fine. If the actual jack is damaged then you'll have to replace it. No real ease here, though, as you'll have to take the laptop apart either way.

You can also run diagnostics.. power on and press F12 on dell logo slowly 5 times
Select diagnostics and follow on screen instructions. If the LCD fails its time to replace the same.
