Panasonic DMR ES40V Err message, DVD won't play or record

Just get Err message, no number when I put in any DVD. I took it apart and the lazer reader is clean. The head slides on track with no binding. I thought these machines were supposed to be less problem than the VCR's. Machine is 3 years old. Help.

I have the same problem. I put in an unlabeled dvd disc in the machine. I received the ERR message and from that point on, NO dvd plays. I have own this model for years. I called Panasonic and they could not give a solution except send it away for VERY expensive repair. Will buy a new one before I do that. Please post a solution if you know one.

I have the exact same problem. HELP!!

I have a similar or related problem: after I record on a disc for a few minutes and then stop it, when I try to record on that same disc again,
a " err please check the disc" message pops up, and the machine will not record on that disc again. Occasionally, if I clean the disc, it will resume recording on that disc, but this is very rare. This even happens on new discs.

1 Your solution is for the model DMR-ES40; my machine is the
    DMR-ES40V.
    2. Are these two machines the same, and will the firmware that you
    downloaded work for both models?

I had a similar ERR message and freaked out a bit for a week. Panasonic customer service was no help and suggested i send it in for VERY expensive repair. No way. After tons of additional research and trouble shooting I fixed my unit tonight. I downloaded the DMR-ES40 DVD Recorder Firmware Update from the Panasonic update and stored in on a CD. Put the cd in my dvd player following instructions from the website. My system is restored and works well again.
Why paid personnel at Panasonic could not tell me this is beyond my understanding.
Try updating you firmware as I did. Hope you get the same success. -Tamara

Panasonic DMR-ES40V VCR won't schedule record: Recently, the VCR will not do scheduled recording anything beyond today. I can schedule a recording and it appears OK (I get red light on panel), but I never...

I found this solution on one of your old notes (but a different machine). I set up a scheduled record for 11:59 PM to 12:01 AM for the current day, then set up the scheduled record for the next day. The VCR recorded both the initial 2 minute session and the later one which I wanted to record.

Panasonic ES40v - Can't play DVD's - Incorrect region

I had the same trouble, also wouldn't play back discs that I recorded using it. The commonly listed reset of channel up and down at the same time was not meant for this model.
Below is the official solution that was sent to me by panasonic.
After using this method to reset my player it worked great. it was just like taking it out of the box for the first time.

Panasonic DVD Recorder

We need to narrow down where the problem lies. Even without finalizing the disc, you should be able to play back the recording. Can you do this? If you can play back the recording, the problem exists in the finalization stage and we'll need to concentrate there. Pplease update this and we'll proceed to the next step.

Thanks,
Dan
