Question about Gateway Essential 466 PC Desktop

3 Answers

My desktop is working very slow

I have gateway Essential 466c with intel celeron processor and I have 256mb and 32mb ram. It came with windows 98 when I purchased it. I have installed windows xp pro last year. My pc is not working fast and I am thinking of changing the mother board to intel core 2 duo. Is it possible to replace the motherboard or is there any solution for making it work faster with the existing system?

You need to perform some maintenance activity by:

-- cleaning system junk
-- optimizing computer services
-- optimizing internet
-- repairing registry
-- defraging registry
-- clearing browsers junk

do these things with some secure tool such as Intel Software Partner Reginout. In addition to it upgrading RAM would be helpful .thanks

You wont be able to upgrade your Motherboard without buying a new CPU and most likely new RAM also. Can you specify that it is either 256 or 32 MB or System RAM? Maybe 256 System and 32 on the Video card, or maybe you meant 256MB or 33Mhz, in which case you need to get a new system... You should probably take away all the fancy visual appearances away which in Control Panel in System on the Advanced Tab, which is also where you can check on the status of your Page File which should be set at 128-312 MB, anything lower or higher will slow your PC down. Also you can download something called ResetDMA.VBS that can reset your transfer mode back to DMA if you are in PIO (slow). Last but not least, scan for viruses with Trojan Hunter, Bit Defender, ClamWin, F-prot, Avast, Ad-aware, etc...

You speed up your existing system by upgrading the memory to 1GB.
If you want a much faster machine then you will need to replace the motherboard, memory, PSU (power suppy) hard drive and processor.
If you change the motherboard etc you will notice the difference in speed

kind regards and please don't forget to rate us

My gateway essential 400 cant run newer programs **** *** window 7... or explorer 8... or flashplayer 10... how can i upgrade my computer 2 make it run these programs ? a new hard drive ? or what do i do...

Hi,

You can add hard drive if your system doesnt have enough space for the new programs. If the new programs installs well but is running slow or not starting, then you will have to upgrade your RAM and for better performance, fix one graphics card suitable for *********** board. If you can spend more, Upgrade *********** board and processor.

Thanks

I need to know how much ram my motherboard will be able to run without burning up? I have an Emachines t1090 w/ Windows XP, 900MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 128MB SDRAM, CD-ROM 48x Max. CD-Drive, 20GB Hard...

The max for your system is 512MB. You have two memory slots and one has a 128MB chip so if you want 512MB, you need two 256MB chips and throw away the 128MB.
At Newegg, a 256MB chip is $42+ shipping of $1. I'd consider getting a new computer instead.
I don't think memory upgrade will tax your system cooling.

Evo d510 small form factor with 1.79ghz processor what other size of processor can i put in

The Compaq Evo D510's motherboard has a Socket 478 processor socket, and uses an Intel 845G motherboard chipset.

This is information on the Socket 478 processor socket,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_478

As you can see the processor socket has the holes, while the processor has the pins.
478 socket holes.

Only Intel processors that fit into a Socket 478 processor socket, can be used.
Intel Celeron or Pentium 4.

Motherboard Chipset:
The motherboard chipset consists of the Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip.
Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit.

The Northbridge chip handles the high-speed processes, while the Southbridge handles the low speed processes of a computer.

The Northbridge handles the Processor, Ram Memory, and any high speed graphics.

(AGP and PCI Express being high-speed graphics.
Any graphics adapter card inserted into a PCI slot, or Integrated Graphics {On-Board), is a slow speed process. Handled by the Southbridge chip)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

[CPU stands for Central Processing Unit, or for short - Processor)

This is information about the Intel 845G chipset,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Pentium_4_Chipsets

Scroll down on the left until you come to -
845G
Read across.

The Nothrbridge chip is the Intel 82845G.
The Southbridge chip is the Intel ICH4.

As you can read looking across, and at the top of the chart, the 845G will support processors with;

1) Celeron, Celeron D, and Pentium 4 processors.

2) Up to a 533MHz FSB. (533MegaHertz Front Side Bus)

(Pentium 4 processors are better than Celeron.
The Celeron was designed as a budget processor.
'Celey's' generally have half of the L2 cache, that a comparable Pentium 4 has)

I felt listing this information in this manner, would help you can make an informed decision, as to what processors are compatible with the Evo D510 motherboard, instead of just stating, "Get this processor".

I will include a link of a website I found some time ago, that sells Pentium 4's with these parameters, at a very reasonable cost.

Would there be any 32bit PCI expansion slots on an IBM windows98?

There are PCI slots, but the processor, ram, and video capabilities are far below what modern components expect. You probably could get the wireless card to work, make sure the manufacturer has drivers for Windows 98 before you buy the card.

In my opinion you should maximize your RAM. For a Dimension 2400, Dell's manual claims the min is 128 Mb and the max is 1Gb. Not sure how you got to only 32Mb of RAM but you'll see a big improvement in performance if you increase it.

Do you have an old IBM or a Dell (the area you posed the question in)?

yes, a 400 mhz processor can run windows xp, but you will want to have a LOT of ram. i would not recommend it unless you have at 256-512 or more ram.

windows 2000 can get along with 128-256 ram.
