Re: smoke came out of my hp laserjet 4 printer
It could be the the fuser unit over heated and needs to be replaced. If you open the back you should see 2 screws flat at bottom. Remove them and pull fuser unit out. You should be able to tell by looking at it if this is what was smoking.

This appears to be an issue with the driver. Before replacing the driver though, make sure it isn't just the document itself that is the issue. Try printing several different documents. If all other documents print, there's a problem with the document itself. If several, or all documents from multiple sources (not all generated from the same program) then it's time to completely uninstall the driver, and then go to www.hp.com and get the driver specifically for your operating system for that printer and install it. Remember to reboot between the uninstall and the reinstall.
If this yields the same results, then install an HP laserjet 4 driver on the same port as the currently installed driver using the add printer function in control panel/printers. print the offending documents through this driver by selecting the HP Laserjet 4 as the printer when printing. If this solves the issue, make the laserjet4 the default driver.
You don't say what kind of a document you are trying to print. Did you try to print something else. Did it print? Normally if you try and print a complex spread sheet you may get that warning. You have the option of adding more memory or making your print job less complex. Or printing to another printer.
THE DOCUMENT WAS SAVED AS A C5 "SIZE" OF PAPER AND THE PRINTER IS ASKING YOU TO PUT THAT SIZE PAPER IN THE MANUAL FEEDER. HAVE THE PDF FILE RECREATED IF POSSIBLE AND SAVE IT AS THE APPROPRIATE SIZE PAPER.
The document you're trying to print is formatted for legal size paper, and the tray contains only letter size. if it's a legal size, put legal paper into the MP tray, or override the setting and manually select "letter size" in the printer dialog box.
If it only prints the 1st 3/4 ish of the page then it could either be the page slipping a bit due to poor pick up rollers or much more likely it could be that you are sending a large file to the printer and the printer does not have enough memory.
Try printing in draft or scale down the res/size of the file you are printing
