Sound blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card does not support recording. The stereo mix (aka "What you Hear") is dependent on the hardware and the drivers for that hardware. Unless the sound card (or more properly, its drivers) support the function. Is there software solution? A "driver" which intercepts "what you hear" and routes it to the recorder and not depend on the feature being implemented by the driver for the current sound card, etc?

It sounds like you may have broken your sound card. I had the same problem when I tried to digitise my old 4-track recordings.
I tried the broken card in another PC, found that it was not working, so I went out and bought a new sound card.
SOURCE: I have a Realtek HD audio driver on my Windows XP
Make sure your input and out put device is set to Realtek HD Audio Input; & Realtek HD Audio output, respectively, in sound and audio device settings.(under voice tab) Next ensure there are no ticks in the boxes muting your mic, & finally make sure you volume sliders are about half way up.
