The cover is designed this way. If the cover fit tightly, as the food cooked the cover would bounce and spit condensation onto your counter. The gap will not affect cooking performance.

I hate this with a passion and in 30 years never had the problem until I bought a Bravetti slow cooker recently (because of it's larger oval size.) (I've always used Rival up till now and like them much better.) Rival crock pots are designed to sputter a little bit - occasionally especially if you don't fill them up to the rim with liquid, but the Bravetti brand sputters and spews the whole cooking time once it's up to boiling even with the liquid level well below the rim.
My interim solution has been to place a shallow pan under the crock put so that when it boils over, the liquid will run into the pan and not all over my counter and down the cabinet and onto the floor. I also put several layers of paper toweling to absorb the liquid and change it several times during cooking...but to me, the best thing about a crock pot is that you can set and leave it for hours...not nursing it every hour.
But my problem has been solved since I cannot find a lid for the Bravetti Slow Cooker KC271H and must replace the whole thing. I put a chuck roast with potatoes, carrots, and green beans into my cooker and turned it on high but never plugged it in. By the time I realized what I had (not) done, it was too late to use the slow cooker, so I put the removable crock with lid into the oven at 350 degrees for 4 hours. The knob on the lid melted into a puddle, but did not ruin the food inside...thus the reason to find a replacement lid.
I'm going back to my old friend, Rival!
