I got dell vostro a840 laptop i installed winxp sp2 but it is not supporting sound and modem driver even from the cd provided by dell.

Dell manufactured this laptop to run vista, even Dell's site is showing drivers for vista only.

Try re-installing the audio driver.
You can download the audio and device drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop, better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag label is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where the specific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you select the Windows of the drivers for your Windows operating system. If you do not have a RECOVERY CD then contact Dell to purchase this Recovery CD for your model Dell computer or laptop.
Boot up using the Recovery CD and follow the instructions.

The other way is to re-install Windows using a Windows installation CD; it must match the Windows version on the Windows Product Code label on the bottom of your laptop or on the side or back of the desktop computer.

Boot up using the Windows installation CD and follow the instructions.
Next install all of the Dell's computer/laptop device drives.
Next install the Windows service packs (SP2 & SP3 for XP, SP1 & SP2 for Vista)
Next Activate Windows via the Internet or by phone.
Next install all your programs - Microsoft Office, anti-virus etc.
Next click on Start - Programs - Windows Update (for the latest updates).
Next copy your data back to the computer/laptop.

Get a copy of "Driverpack Solutions" and run it. It sounds as though you do not have the network drivers installed.

I have a dell optiplex 740, and i was looking into doing a factory restore, do i need a cd to restore it, or can i just continue with out it, by pressing the f8 option upon restarting the computer?

It appears you may have installed to wrong audio driver.
To download the correct audio driver then download the drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Dell Vostro 430 - cannot play out sound from pc


Should have an audio card indeed. But if there are audio connections on the back it will definitely have an audio card installed.
Did you check the Device Manager to see if the audio drivers are installed?

In case you need to find drivers and can't find them on the Dell site, try driver finder, great program. Will also find the audio drivers on other sites if Dell does not have them.
