Poor line condition-can't send fax

I have this fax machine and it has been working fine, however there is one number that it will not fax to. I have faxed to this business many times but recently it won't go through. The error message is "poor line condition". All other faxes work and the number in question works from other fax machines in the office. Please help!

I am also having issues sending faxes, no problems receiving since all I get is junk mail anyhow (LOL!) The number I am sending a fax through is a toll free 1-800. What kind of phone service to you subscribe to? We have digital cable phone so we are wondering if that may be the problem or if it might be the "switch" on the receiving end to flip the 1-800 to their local fax number. We found that if we used the long distance fax number rather than the toll free to the same location, that it worked. That's what we found anyway!

There is nothing about the ECM in my manual as to how to turn it off. It does suggest utilizing the Overseas Mode. I guess I should mention, mine is the Canadian version... perhaps it is an international toll free number even though it is within Canada... hmmm, I'll have to try and get back to you on that one. Switching the compatibility option did not work either.

I'm not sure what type of machine it is but I think it's a Brother. It has a separate fax line and isn't connected to a computer or network or anything like that. The machine will receive faxes fine but...

Are you working with a line over VOIP like Vonage? If so faxes can be hard to send and receive because of line condition.
Also, if you have DSL make sure that you have the proper line conditioners in place so you have good line condition.
If those aren't a problem then contact your phone provider to discuss the issue.

What does poor line condition mean? i can receive and send faxes but to one particular fax number is it my fax or the other side?

If this happening only on one fax number, its the other side, could be their line or fax machine.

Just make sure for youre end that the telephone wire is in the LINE jack of fax machine (NOT EXT) and other end should should go directly to wall jack (meaning no extention or splitter)

We have a HP 1050 fax machine. Usually when we send something, it displays send ECM and the number of pages. Occasionally it displays send G3 and the number of pages. I can't find anywhere in the user...

this is just the transition speed and line condition and you dont have to worry about it , the machine will give you an error code if the faxes dont go through alturnativly contact the reciever of the fax to check that they have recieved it

G3 means poor line condition

Mfc-9840cdw scan poor line condition out of memory - how can this be solved. i feel so dense because it appears your site has already offered solutions but i can't even find them there!

Hello,

Poor line condition / out of memory is almost always caused by poor line condition.
This is to say that there is a problem trying to send because the signal is not going through clearly enough.

This error can be due to either your fax machine or the receiving ends fax machine.

Try sending to other numbers as a test to see if it works for other numbers (you can use 1-866-685-8587 for the brother test line)

If you get the same error no matter who you send to, you may want to try another jack or telephone cable.
If you are using a splitter, try without the splitter.

Thanks,

Pat

Using MagicJack for faxing; however, Brother MFC 290C is stating poor line condition - why? Also say's low ink Magenta - would that create this problem?

I had the same problem trying to send out faxes out using my Brother MFC 7340. I use a magic jack phone line. Page 106 of the user manual says if sending via VOIP phone line, you should press menu, then 2, 0, 1 to select "Basic (for VOIP) mode. Then press ok. Then press stop/exit. This cuts the modem speed down to 9600 bps and turns ECM off. Then retry to send the fax. I did that and can now send and receive faxes.

Cannot send faxex

Did you try to send a fax to a different number? Also are you sending to a local number? Most send problems are poor phone line conditions. If you have tried to send to several different numbers with no success, then you can assume that the LIU board needs to be replaced. It costs about $40.00 from Brother for the part.
