About one fourth of the page is unreadable, like someone used a dirty rake down the page. I changed the toner but it made no difference.

If stripes are lines (thin/thick) then, scanner glass dirty or need drum, posible PM-Kit. If stripes are like wide bands , then a General cleaning and/or drum is needed.

Stripes are a universal problem that have several causes. In digital copiers, dark streaks can be caused by a dirty main charger wire, or transfer wire. It can also be caused by s defective fuser roller. This is a hollow teflon coated roller that has a heat lamp inside which provides the heat necessary to melt the toner into the paper. If this is the case, a simple test will uncover the cause. Start a copy and before the copy exits the machine, turn off the main power switch. Open the copier and look at the image on the paper. If the stripes are not there, then its a safe bet that the fuser roller is bad. You can usually look at the roller and see grooves in the teflon coating that correspond to the stripes on your copies. Sorry to be so wordy but it can be a complex problem.

Analog machine:If they are black lines in the direction of the paper path it could be a dirty or bad drum wiper blade, if they are broader and at a ninety degree angle to the paper path it could be a damaged drum.
If the lines are white in the direction of the paper path it's probably a dirty charge corona
Digital:If your machine is a digital copier and the lines are black it could also be a dirty corona.
Please include in question the model and brand.

UPDATE
Tried all the suggestions even though I was sure none would cause the problem I was having. Ended up being the toner motor that agitates the toner. When this motor goes out the toner piles to one end and spills out excessively cause the black strip I was getting (see above picture in my first post). Motor was only $45.00 but you can order them online for $65.00.

Clean the scanner plate with alcohol wipe. The line on your page corresponds with the location of the dirt on the scanner plate.

I'm having the same problem. Prints a big strip across the bottom. Is this just a cleaning problem as well?

UPDATE
Well, I tried all the suggestions mentioned but I was pretty sure none of them would cause the problem. In my case it ended up being the toner motor that agitates the toner, it wasn't working. This caused all the toner to pile on the one end which cause it to leak out when printing making the black strip (see first post above). The motor was only $45.00 but you can order them on-line for $65.00

It also depends if the black lines or stripes are coming from document fed copies or from the main glass as well.
If it is only from the document feeder then it is likely that the small slit glass on the left hand side of the document reader has dirt on it and can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth with a very small bit of washing up liquid on it.
It's always worth looking at this before replacing the various rollers.
It is also worth a look at replacing the drum unit as this will also cause black lines and streaks on copies, this model will not give an error code like most canon models.

many possible causes
first check the consumables..the opc the maybe deteriorated.. check the copy meter if the number of copies reached the maximum no. of copies
then
check the primary corona wire.. maybe it is corroded..clean it
the transfer corona wire and seperation wire may also be the possible cause.. clean it
cleaned optics and mirrors

If you make a copy on the glass and or print to it and the line doesn't appear then you need to look closely at the slit glass and clean it well. Also check for dust on the optics. The Main Charge corona on the Falcon engines (KM-3035, etc..) seem to fail after a time. The drum blade can also cause this problem. Igt is best to provide samples of what you are seeing to better diagnose these quality issues.

Need more information about stripes such as
1. Are they lead to trail.
2. Are they the same if copied from the flat glass versus being fed through the document processor.
3. Are they present on machine reports.

Hello,
If you are copying from the ADF (top feeder) then you could just have a case of cleaning your slit glass to the left of you main glass, also give the rollers a good clean just above the slit glass. If its through the main glass or printing, either the teansfer charger or the drum may need replacing
Regards, Steve

If the stripes are from the top edge (rear of machine) and appear to be heading towards centre, suspect drum. If the stripes are accompanied by a grinding noise and copy quality is good (except for the stripes), suspect scan assembly sticking. Lube scanrail.

The drum assy may require replacement. Usually good for 100,000 A4 copies. Common signs are 'tyre' marks at the top of the copy (rear of machine).
